The best way to make B&W is to start by correcting the color, then convert it to B&W in only one step using "Gradient Map" in the "Adjustments" filter (Photoshop). If you do that to my edited version, you get the result below.

Ok here's my go at this :-
1 Change mode to LAB colour
2 Adjust levels in luminance channel
3 Sharpen luminance channel
4 Adjust curves b channel to warm up image
5 Change back to RGB colour
6 Desaturate reds to get cheek skin tones a bit more even
7 With magic wand tool isolate face and desaturate yellows as she looked a bit jaundiced at this time
8 Blur tool @ 20% on facial skin to smooth it slightly
9 Clone tool to do something about that red spot above the eyes
