Planting
I have begun a series for a client. I am playing with treatments, views, processing etc.
Your comments on this greatly appreciated. In particular I'm wondering how the levels of contrast and sharpening work for you in terms of the overall effect. Comments on any additional facet also welcomed.
Thanks!!

Re: Planting
I feel the contrast and sharpening are fine but so is the composition. I also like the positioning of the tractor because it's unusual (almost as if it's going the wrong way).
However and I could be wrong here, but I think the whole thing is tilted downwards. But it may well be that the field is that way, so I'm sorry if I'm wrong on this point. Very good shot though in all.
It reminds me a bit of a tractor picture that Gary posted some time back.

Re: Planting
Nice composition. I like the placement of the tractor in the frame. The gray tones have good tonal range.
Cheers,

Re: Planting
drg, I like this , but feel that a slighter tighter composition would work better. the tractor is far off and small in the frame. It looks like it's making a mad dash out of the scene. Thats ok, there is a pleasing tension with that. As Tom mentioned, I too see a tilt in the horizon. It's also a bit dark from the horizon and down.
btw, I am noticing the upper part of the sky looks like it had some treatment, possibly to smooth noise or grain? I would apply this to the entire sky as it looks like the effect was diminished as we look down towards the horizon.
I'm just pointing out things I'm noticing on my screen. Sharpness looks fine btw. I think the image can work as it is.

Re: Planting
Tom, Jim, Gary,
Thanks for the comments and input!
The land slopes at this point and I was concerned it would look like the photograph was rotated. I was definitley experimenting with this photograph! As I look more I'm also seeing some effects of the 18mm focal length too.
Gary thanks for the added suggestions about the noise reduction/processing. I'll incorporate a different application in future work in this series. The dust in the air played havoc with getting the clear photographs I wanted that day. Too much noise reduction and it looks muddy and not enough and it looks, well, kind of like this one!
Thanks again for looking. I've got some time later this week to work on some more these. Then I can plan the next couple of shoots.

Re: Planting
I agree that there seems to be a tilt in the photo. Not sure though, it could be that the background itself is slightly uneven. I would also recommend a tighter crop. That would make the tractor stand out better. Right now, it seems that the background prevents it from doing so. Perhaps if you were at a lower point where the tractor was against the sky instead, might work out even better. Finally, I'd do some sharpening here... it's too soft for me. I don't really see why no one else hasn't mentioned that...? Maybe it's me that needs glasses eh?
