    The Gannel

    undefinedundefinedundefined

A few pics I have taken at my favourite location. The Gannel , Newquay, Cornwall, England. Taken Eastertime evening last year . The small river/stream winds its way through the sand to the sea...and then, wait long enough, the sea comes in land and the area you see in the foreground becomes submerged ! Beautiful sunsets occur. I very rarely use any manual settings on my Olympus D40zoom ...because I am very lazy. These are real snaps - quite faithfully reproduced - untouched by software ! No doubt they could be improved by a pro photographer using manual controls.

I don't think there's much to improve here. The exposures are perfect. The camera's auto exposure struck a perfect balance between the sunset and the foreground details. Any lighter and you would have lost the color in the sky. Any darker and you would have lost the very important foreground details. These photos say a lot about the quality of the Olympus metering.

But what's most important is the mind and eyes behind the camera. And for me that really comes through in the first photo. I love the overall scene and color in both photos. But the boat in the first one completes the image. The composition is excellent and it's just a very well-conceived and executed photo. There's no shame in using the auto features on your camera. Especially if you know they work and they work this well. Of course, it's nice to have manual features available and know how to use them. But if auto exposure frees up your mind and lets you concentrate more on composition and content, then that's a good thing. It's the results that count.

Thank you John...absolutely right about the camera -Olympus produce some great stuff...what I like about the D40/C40 zoom is that its compact but full of features (most I don't use). Its auto functions rarely let you down. Despite being several years old and uses Smartmedia you can get these cams in the UK and US at sites/shops selling refurbs....worth a look in my view ! The camera is the photographer....i just do a bit of directing !

ps I don't crop my pics either !

Another shot from the Gannel using Olympus C40 zoom without any PC manipulation back at base. I am very fond of this location !
