    is this a re-touched photo if not how did you achieve the black background?

    The back of the tank is painted dark blue. The angle of the flash is down so that it doesn't illuminate the back of the tank. When I adjusted the levels slightly the little bit of blue that was visible disappeared. The only other touch-up that was done was to use the clone stamp to remove some floating particles in the water.
