Orton Effect - Venice Masks

Hi all

Probably the last posts of my Orton experiments (time to move on to something else!).

These are images from Venice. Lots of shops there sell masks for their famous carnival - these were just taken through shop windows. I always thought that a lot of the masks look a little sinister - I thought the Orton effect might accentuate this.

What do you think?

Perfection - I love the colours and the very subtle effect but it works beutifully on these images.

I like the first shot irrespective of the effect used.
On the second one I'm finding it hard to notice any applied effect. There are a couple of hotspots on the face though which I imagine were hard to avoid. I suppose I would need to see the original of the second one for me to notice the benefits or otherwise of the effects.
But both are nice images.

I like your use of the effect here. My weak attempts illustrate the difference between proper use (yours) and merely fumbling around (mine).

Don't be so hard on yourself - I'm thinking back to some of the rubbish I've put up here as experiments; I didn't know if they would work or not. Surprised by some of the ones that did work.

If you don't experiment and get rotten reviews then your not trying hard enough.

I can't remember who said it "You can tell a good photographer by the quantity of photographs in the bin" well it was something like that.

Overbeyond: I attach the original of image 2 - I was going for a subtle effect, but you can see the difference.

Swmdrayfan - a thousand Amens to what Roger said - I have deleted 17 versions and wasted 2 sheets of (expensive!) A4 paper to get image No 1 - and I am still not happy with it!

Just proves that a good image is required for the effect to work.

I like both equal amounts but would buy the orton for its softness,

Mike, I think these are excellent pieces, and while the effects seem to work and add a new feel I don't think it is needed to keep these up on the level they are. Either way you choose, effect or not, they work very well.

Seems to me Mike that applying the effect has caused the hot spots on the face. Therefore I would have been well happy with the original; maybe a very slight curves adjustment.
BTW I always print a 6x4 first before committing myself to the big stuff.

These are excelent. As a newbe I have no idea what Orton Effect is, but these pictures rock. I like the second one the best without the effect. Could be a feature for sure.

The second shot of the lone face works for me, without the orton effect. You do such a masterful job at framing your subjects. This one is a beauty.

Thanks again for your comments - it is always appreciated. My own view is that image #2 is probably better in the original version. The Orton Effect does seem to work well though on the first image - the original file doesn't have the same sense of creepiness (which was the reason for applying it). Sadly though, it doesn't print up as well as it looks. Still, it was fun :D
