    Little Boat

Hi all. I stumbles across an old boat recently and found it difficult to find the right angle for this picture. What do you think about this attempt? It's shot on color negative film and converted to BW in PS.

    Thanks,
    Frank

I think you chose a good angle. A square crop something like this would reduce the effect of the pier leading our eye away from the subject. How did you do the BW conversion in PS?

I like the shot Frank. Chuck's crop is perfect.

    Re: Little Boat

Thanks both. I like the proposed square crop, something I should try more often now I see it.
As for the BW conversion, I did the following:
    - Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Channel Mixer > OK
    - Check Monochrome box
    - Move sliders to 60 (red), 10 (green) and 30 (blue) (or close to these figures)
    - Click OK and go to Layer > Flatten Image
    - Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance > OK
    - Select Midtones (default)
    - Set color levels for the 3 channels to +20, +10 and -10
    - Don't click on OK yet but select Shadow tones (radio button)
    - Set color levels for the 3 channels to +20, +10 and -10
    - Click on OK. The picture now shows as sepia. If you want to keep this, Flatten Image and Save.
    - For BW: Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance > OK
    - Select Midtones (default)
    - Set color levels for the 3 channels to -20, -10 and +10 (so opposite to previous setting!)
    - Don't click on OK yet but select Shadow tones (radio button)
    - Set color levels for the 3 channels to -20, -10 and +10
    - Click on OK.
    - Layers > Flatten Image
    - Save image

Hope this helps. I'm sure there are other (better) ways but this has always worked for me.

    Cheers,
    Frank

Interesting way to do the black and white conversion. I've used some aspects of that, but not all of them. I'll certainly have to try it! Great shot by the way!

All that hard work and no levels or contrast adjustment?!
    Nice shot, neat boat.
