trying out new lens on dog action shot

Hi guys, my lens turned up I went for the 70-300mm Tamron in the end, any critique on this photo would be great, I don't think its too bad for a newbe!! I've made the pic quite small it shows more of the water in detail when its larger.

Too small to critique. Make it 800 on the long side and we can see detail better.

I am impressed, good detail, sharp, and a wonderful subject.

I like the frozen action of the water. The dog could be farther into the frame.

Yes I thought that, about getting him more in the middle of the shot, but i've also read somewhere that with action shots like that its good for the subject to have a space to run into. So, I haven't cropped this or sharpened it, do most people mess around a touch shots up after they have been taken, or is it best just to leave it. Thanks for the comments!!

;You're right about having space for the dog to run into. I just think it is a little too much in this case.
Every one tries to get it right the first time, every time, but no one does so I have no problem being able to improve the original. Every pro does it.
You're creating an image with tools, only one of which is the camera and lens.

The only thing that annoys me is you cut off the dogs tail with it being so tightly cropped.
I do like the frozen look of the water.
I think you could freeze it slightly more by going up to a ISO 400 or even 800 and setting the shutter faster like a 1/2000 or even maybe a 1/3200

all in all I do like the approach of it just needs a little touching up.
