I thought of the moon pic below when I saw tonight's striking full moon. My first few shots were just a birght light until I figured out I needed to spot meter. This is one of the better ones. Cropped about 50%. Does it do anything for you?

I tried taking some moon shots with my DRebel last night, and all I got is an orange ball. What are you using for equipnent and settings if you don't mind me asking?

I used a Nikon D70 on a cheap tripod and a 300mm lens. It has a spot meter, which I aimed at one of the brighter areas of the moon after setting the ISO to 400 or 800 and choosing aperture priority with different apertures from f/8 to f/32. The shutter was 1/15 up to 1/125.

This shot was f/11 and 1/320. I thik the ISO was 400. All the matrix metered shots were just a bright ball of light.

Thanks for the info! I'm not even sure if the DRebel has the spot meeter option, but I will have to check the manual when I have some time. There is a beautiful moon out tonight, but I have to get to bed...have to be at work by 3:00am tomorrow.

The full moon is just an object exposed by full sunlight as long as there are no atmospheric conditions like wispy clouds to worry about so you can use the sunny 16 rule for a starter. Use as long a lens as you can with a tripod and mirror lockup and timer or remote if available to minimize shake.

My moons never turned out this sharp. I still don't know what I was doing wrong. I'll have to give it a go again.
