New Work.. A Portrait - Holga...
I have been doing some new work lately!
Been doing some portraits, with my Holga.
Been trying different stuff, from double exposures to this...
    What do you think?

What a neat Holga. Mine takes 4 pictures at slightly different times and angles.

This is just a plain old Holga, nothing special, other than it has been modified, by www.holgamods.com.
The two frames are two separate but adjacent frames not the same frame.

I am really growing tired of seeing Holga shots around the 'net. It seems like too many people use them as a cover for poor photographic skills in the hopes that the degraded image of the Holga will somehow enhance the "mood" or "look" they otherwise would have failed to capture.

That being said, I don't think you've misused the Holga in the least with these shots. Both of them have a very intentional "studied" quality, and I think you knew exactly how to achieve that with the Holga. These remind me of frames from old home movies. The girl in the shots is very cute, and she's very relaxed. There's something ever-so-slightly "bland" about the tones, but certainly not any degree greater than I've been guilty of in the past. Also, I REALLY hate to nitpick about the details of candids, but the horizontal lines in the first shot just don't work for me. They're off from level, but not so off that the result feels intentional. It feels to me as if you're shooting from an odd angle. I'm all about odd angles, but against a background with lines, the result gets a little funky.
Overall, I like what you've done here and I'm always happy to see posters who place the relationship with the subject before the technical "perfection" of the shot. These pictures are always more interesting to me, and I wish we'd see more of them here.

P.S. wasn't that sneaky how I started off railing on Holgas as if I was about to rip you a new one in my critique...? Just trying to keep things interesting... ;)

    OK?
But what do you think of the photograph then?

As far as a Holga photo, pretty good. I really don't have that much experience in dealing with Holga photography, so I'm a pretty poor judge of what the capabilities are.

You almost got the Meatyard vibe going with these! The natural Holga vignette really works well to define the first (closeup) photo while still being clear and sharp.

I like how the tilt of the first one seems be both casual and intentional with upward tilt of the boards lending some 'energy' to the photo. I'd like to see less shadow under the chin, but I reserve the right to change my mind and go with it the way it is!

The Holga pics above the Nikon Samurai logo is pretty humourous.

Of your latest posts, I like this one best. It has a "genuine" feel. The relaxed enjoyment of the subject is contagious.
