    Step 1: shoot something (anything)
Step 2: learn from the shoot
Step 3: go back to Step 1

    (hint: it never ends)

I told you how I learned in my reply to you in the hula hoop thread. Flowers are your friends. lol I started out with a really crappy camera, kept saving my money and upgrading only if I advanced in my skills - that was how i rewarded myself. I saw a guy who shot a cover for sports illustrated with a disposable 110 camera - So trust me, after seeing that guys work - it's not the camera that makes the photographer - it's years of practicing and developing your eye and technique! I don't folllow the rules - I've used everything halloween lights (flourescent black lights, colored lights, strobes) to tin foil on cardboard when I couldn't afford a reflecter! ;) Outdoors i've even used my car's headlights and breaklights!

Sure, get a hold of a good art book on the elements of design. Find a book on photographic composition. Subscribe to Popular Photography, Photo Techniques or another good magazine and look carefully at both composition and the technique of the photos. Join a high level photographic organization that provides opportunities to take photos as well a critical judgements of your work.

There is lots more but that will at least, get you started in the right direction.
