Need unbiased opinion

For some reason, I just love this photo and I'm not sure why. Besides them being my kids, I have taken tons of pictures of them and this one still catches my eye. Does anyone else like this? Feedback on what you don't like or like all welcome.

I like the lazy relaxed feel of this shot(and I think it's neat that the same girl is in the foreground with the other in the distance---is that a series ;o)

the only thing I find distarcting about this shot is the competition between the pink tights and the red of the tights in the distance--makes it hard to keep focus in one general spot

I took the liberty of "tweaking" the colors on this and posted three versions I prefer the "handcolored muted one"

Hmmm, I think that this is more of a feel-good photo than a technically good photo. Things I like about it: the pleasant soft colors, and the playfulness of the children. It must bring back good memories for you, and heck, I wasn't even there but it makes me think of fun times I've had at the beach. Things I think could be better: the horizon is tilted a bit, and both girls are 'leaving' the photo. I mean they are either looking/facing out of the shot or walking away from the camera.

Thank you both for input. I had a feeling that my memories of that day (first time at the beach) was clouding my judgement (hence the title). Your comments were all right on.

Natatbeach - Now that you've pointed it out, I notice that I'm having trouble with my eye jumping between the two girls. It still happens with your muted version.( And by same girl I think you mean my other post - it's actually my other daughter in front this time).

Spike - I had noticed tilted horizon but thanks for pointing out that subjects were leaving picture. Reminders like that are good for improving in the future.

I'll still keep this in my photo album for good memories!

I like what you did with the muted color one. Was this done in photoshop? What settings? Thanks.

Like it because the kids are leaving the photo. I think someone said otherwise. I think this is a place where the break of the traditional rules work. Like the balance of both girls on either side of the frame.

Don't like the head being cut off by the horizon line. Don't like the horizon being tilted.

All in all, good wholesome family fun.

This is good; I like it. It has some energy and reminds me of some 1970s stuff you see in modern art museums sometimes. It has some flaws, though. If you see the child's face in the foreground, I think it would be a stonger photo.

While the horizon is slightly tilted, I don't think it really detracts from the photo. To me it adds a dynamic touch. Remember the old Batman and Robin TV series? They would tilt the cameras to add a sense of dynamic energy - especially during the fight scenes. That is what I think of here.

Also, while the girls may be "leaving" the photo, look at it again and you will notice that they are placed at roughly the rule of thirds points! Also, draw a line from the lower left corner to the upper right corner, and holy moly, it crosses both girls. So you've worked the diagonal as well. This may not be as technically flawed as you thought!

Finally, while the colors may clash, and the girls are leaving the photo, look at each one individually. The girl in the lower left has her feet up, and is looking around, obviously enjoying herself. To me, this typifies a day at the beach. She is the primary subject and her sister adds balance to the photo IMHO.

My two cents worth. And why I can see why you like it.

I think Speed's comments are spot on. If the girls were facing the camera instead of the water, it would seem unnaturaI to me. like this photo.
