My first Post...

Hi All,

I am a newbie to this forum and pretty much to everthing, I have always had an interest in photography and have been playing around for a year or so.

I have a couple of photos and this will be the first (ever :D ) to be posted.

Please let me know what yout think!

It looks a little flat to me and under exposed (needs a little more contrast and brightness). When I post I always resize to 640 pixels on the longest side for the largest image possible. It does make a difference in viewing.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the initial post. This looks like it could be an interesting subject, but will probably require a little refinement. As is, it's a little hard to tell which is the main subject of the picture, the tree in front, or the building behind? If you want to focus on the building with the tree framing it, then you should get closer so that you have more of the elements you want in the shot. Also as GRF says, work with the contrast and brightness (or even better, levels) to draw out the colors and tones you want.

Welcome to the forum. You pic is interesting, it has a moody backwater feel to it, like a remote area where vegitation is growing wild. The pic is a tad bit dark but I'm not sure that is bad ........... It seems to create the mood. I can't decide if the house or the tree is the subject cause they both act as it. I am glad you didnt over-emphasize the sky, given that there weren't any clouds or such.

Welcome to the website. You will find it to be a lot of fun, educational, and see some terrific photography. As for your first post, I can only add one more comment to what has already been said: watch your horizon, it appears to be tilting. Keep shooting, posting and have fun.

I thought of writing what needed to be done with the photo but it would be better to show you what you can do as an example.

The first thing is to use the Levels feature of the post processing program to ensure that the lighting is right which brings up the picture a lot.

Secondly when composing a picture you need to decide on the subject and make sure it stands out as others have said.

So I hope you don't mind I did some quick edit (levels) and cropped your photo as an example of what you could do as a composition. The reason its so fuzzy is that I took it up to 640 pixels along the longest edge.

Thanks for all the responses.... I did a quick check and found that most of my photos have the tendency to be "flat". Thinking that it is a setting on the Camera ? (I have a Canon A95)

I did a new updated version... Here it is... I will be posting another pic today.

EDIT :(I was just too quick with my post) PS. I see what you mean with the cropping...

Looks like you could have an interesting photo with the trees reflecting in the water - forgot to add that to my last post. So many options - you are lucky.

I also forgot to mention I leveled the horizon to.

I do have a photo with just the tree and reflection.... Will post that one little later :) Taking them one at a time....

I did also straiten it (but after the new upload....)

Its a good photo, one that I like, but it is boring. From a photojournalism standpoint it is excellent, as good as your rhino shot. If you had to take a photo of a boring, red, square farmhouse, then you did an outstanding job. In a photojournalistic context its a great shot, however without that type of context, the photo lacks an interesting subject, though you did frame a boring subject as well as it could be. I would leave the tree in the shot as it is integral to the composition of the shot, without it the shot is worse off, in my opinion.
