mountain man

So maybe my father isn't exactly looking like a mountain man, but with these mountains just about anyone can play the part. I took this in August on Hurricane Ridge, those mountains are the Olympic Mountains. Comments? Thoughts?

Like it. That backdrop is hard to beat. The fact that dad is looking left is a little jarring -- usually a painter would have him facing into the open space, not out the edge of the frame...

That make sense?

The proportions are interesting, I like how you have composed this. The one issue that jump to me is the harsh nature of the sunlight. You might have got away with it if it was only a landscape without anything or anyone in the foreground but your father isn't very well exposed here because of the light.

This is one of these case were you would have needed some morning or evening light but you can't always be at the top of the mountain at the right time. It happened to me more than once... : )

I feel like the Earth can swallow humanity at anytime when I look at this shot. I like the comp but I wish your father was looking into the frame.

Did you or have you considered selecting only the background and making specific adjustments to it? I'm not exactly sure what you would modifiy but you might have additional creative control there.

Lava- I agree, it would've balance the picture out a lot if he was looking to the right. He didn't know I was taking the picture, and I was trying to be discreet.

Seb- Good idea, different lighting would have helped a lot in this picture, for my dad's sake and the mountains. I'll have to try again next time I go back.

Manascsa- I actually did change the curves on the mountains, the grass, and my dad on separate layers. I'll post the original, untampered one.

I'm also seeing a good deal of haloing around your father and much of the vegetation. I'm sure your dad's a great guy, but perhaps this isn't the type of halo you're looking for. :) Great subject matter - don't get to see that around these parts!

I like your original shot best. Your father seems to stand out stronger with less saturation behind him and in the fg. I like the composition but agree that it would have been better with him looking into the frame and a better lighting condition. Still, very good work

I prefer the original post one (edited?)

It's well shot and he should have been facing the other way, but there's not a whole lot that can be done about that other than wait....or put him in the left side of the frame when he's looking that way?
