Mountain Bike Action Shot
I'm new to the photo world and am trying to get the most out of my P&S camera in manual mode. What can I do to make it better?
Camera: Canon A570 IS
Shutter Speed: 1/320
Aperture: 3.2
ISO: 80
Touched up in Picasa
Re: Mountain Bike Action Shot
Looks like you're off to a great start, and I'm jealous of your location :)
First thing I notice is there is no face in it. I'm big at being able to see the face of the rider. I'd also try to crop it so the rider isn't dead center in the photo.
Re: Mountain Bike Action Shot
I agree that having a rider's face in view makes most pictures better. However, I really like how you combined action with the cool view into the valley. I am waivering on having the shot tilted. On one hand I'd like to have the camera straight, but on the other hand I think the tilt adds to the 'punk' feeling of the downhiller getting some great air. Nice shot!
Re: Mountain Bike Action Shot
I agree with the person being centered but for this shot there is no need to see the face. Something is missing and I am not sure. I think the color is a little bland and doesn't make the overall subject pop.
Re: Mountain Bike Action Shot
I would crop a bunch off the top as the sky doesn't add anything to the image (and cropping would get the rider out of the center of the image) and yes the colors are bland.
OTOH you have a great image here. Where is it?
Re: Mountain Bike Action Shot
I agree with the crop I would take some off the bottom to get rid of the trunk and then off the top just below the green branches and some off the right as well. Then adjust the levels and saturation to get better colour

Thanks for your comments. I will play around w/ the original image and repost. This shot was take in Whistler, BC Canada.
Re: Mountain Bike Action Shot
I love it. I like deviating from the traditional face + number plate cycling shot. Love the tilt, the action and the comp.
