    Mooo

Taken just outside Canyonlands National Park, Utah in December. The dark cow doesn't show much detail, but I like the way the cows were looking at me and my vehicle. Comments?

I like the idea. the scene is great. only thing, I don't like how the right cow is lost in the detail. Maybe mask and bring out a bit more detail in the right one just a tad.

I see the the blown out snow on the bottom right and it doesn't bother me. it's ok. A tiny crop might get rid of that if it becomes an issue.

    Other than that, nice capture.

Ha, that's funny Liban, I actually did do exactly as you say here, but it only increased the density of the black cow a little bit. I was afraid to go too far less it look effected. Anyway, this may be a shot that means more to the shooter than the viewer, as it brings back memories of that snowy day ..

    Re: Mooo

In a past life I produced sale books for purebred Angus sales and would normally include photographs of a number of the top prospects in the auction. I would rarely shoot the cattle au natural in the winter because their winter coat becomes long and loses its sheen. Without that sheen and ideal lighting, it is very difficult to capture much detail in black Angus cattle. The best option was to wait until shortly before the sale when the cattle were clipped, then photograph them in morning or evening light. Otherwise, the result would be a fairly flat image that might as well be a silhouette. I never had the opportunity to do work for producers of other breeds that had some color, like your Hereford, but I know they would have been much easier to photograph.

You did well with what you had to work with!

I think the blown snow does hurt the image, it also has a slight blue cast, perhaps some CA (hard to tell at this resolution). The brown ones butt is facing you too, which normally kills an image for me, but thankfully his tail is covering his butthole. Still, I think it may not be playing favorably to the image. I also wish the extra dead space were on the right instead of the left, so the cows were looking into the space. Great detail and focus.

Thanks. That's actually part of what I LIKE about this photo ... it's slightly humorous that the cows seem to be showing off their rears to the camera , like they're bikini gals on the beach! The whites are a bit blown, but I think it's just high key lighting. Thanks for commenting, all.

Ken, I guess there's a science to almost everything!
