Milk drop frozen shots

I did this last night at about 2 am

i spooned some milk over a black cup and out of about 110 only 10-15 came out good.
This was one of the best in my opinion.

that's really cool! i just wish the bottom half of the cup wasn't cut off. i like the contrast in the white milk against a black background. nice job IMO

do you have to use a macro lense for those kind of shots? i tried to do a shot like that, but it didn't work out too well. Either i wasn't usin a fast enough shutter speed or water is a difficult liquid to shot. It looks like you used whole milk in that shot too....good stuff. Hahaah.

no i didnt use a macro lense, i used my 18-55 mm lense. the black backround is a shirt with over some books. i had to put it at a slant because the flash came right back at me. the shutter speed was 1/200, yea i thought it seemed slow too, but it did the trick. I think f/22 and hold on.... yea it was 2% milk it was really fun, just be sure not to get milk on your lense. if you are going to do water, try using a white backround instead of black.

I am sure if Harold Edgerton were still alive he'd be flattered to see this.

I think you did a great job with this, I hope you continue it.
The only thing I would suggest is that there should be a bit more of the foreground so that the whole drop is seen.
I know it is a challenge to do so, but it would make for a better photograph.

Interesting and obviously effective setup! You've demonstrated well that you do not always need a tremendously complex setup to achieve a technically challenging photograph. Nice work, hope to see more, welcome to PR, and congratulations on the 'featured sticky'.

Striking result Mark and you have done really well working within the constraints of the environment that you have been working in. It is interesting that you had a success rate of approximately 15%, doesn't sound too bad at all for this kind of high speed shooting.

Agreed additional foreground would be a quick win,

Great results for a 2am set-up. Since I don't have digital, I would never try this type of shot...shots like this make me want to get a digital


I agree with the others that more fg would of improved the shot, but it is still really sweet the way it is and I love how the tiny drops are flying thru the air. A really great idea and execution. Congrats on the sticky.

i think i am going to do it again since school is out tomorrow for summer! :thumbsup:
over the summer i plan to get some sort of web site designing program and i want to make a website of some of my stuff. ive been looking into dreamweaver (i think thats it) anyone else know any good programs?
thanks for all the support though and next time, ill be sure to get more of the foreground. im also going to try deeper milk, higher drops, and things like that.
