Personally the colour for me, although I am not fond of the HDR type softness of the background (was it HDR?). The mono works too, to an extent - you would have to tone down the carrier bag a little though if you preferred that one as it looks bleached out (you get away with it in colour I think).
I like the B&W better in that it shows the textures in the man's face more prominently. I think I would crop it a little tighter seems like a lot of dead space on the side of the frame.
Thanks, I used the gaussian blur as I didn't really like the background, too many things causing distraction. Here I've reposted based on your suggestions, thanks Mike thanks Ray. Peter

How about an animated GIF or related that cycles between the black and white and the color? Give it 1/2 to 1 second between cycles.

My favorite is the color shot with the background in clearfocus, but I would get rid of the white distracting spots at the top. So far, that's my fave---and I REALLY like this picture!!!
My love for others is NOT conditional on their meeting my standards.
Before I got to it I was going to say the perfect thing for this picture is to bring the man entirely out, including his face, and leave the BG B&W. I'd also make his bag in color also. My problem is that this photograph just isn't really moving me I think that if it was maybe a more interesting subject or him doing something interesting.

Not sure this works, blasted conversions to gif's 256 colors and all  ?
Actually, it blinks like a Christmas decoration

I brought this in to Photoshop CS3, did a cleaner selection and then used Lens Blur on the background. This still doesn't look natural in the slightest but at least it doesn't have the while glow around the subject.
Nice, thanks for that. I'm using the trial version of Nikon Capture NX2, would love to have Photoshop and will work on that for Christmas - CS4 extended. But still learning how to use post processing software, not so easy. Cheers S.

Photoshop has post processing software, I love editing raw image files from my D2x but I am interested to see how well my new G10 will do this Friday. Also I would suggest finding CS3 for a low cost because I am currently trying to get CS4 not to crash constantly.
I really don't like the software blur. Post-processing blur almost always jumps out at me as exactly that. For me, it's in-camera, large aperture shallow depth-of-field, or nothing. In this case, I can't really see the main subject because I'm so distracted by the background.
PJ, I tend to agree, while I like to use blur to try and make a subject pop in this example there is too much of it. What I probably need to do is spend more time trying to set up the picture and think of the effects I'd like to see as an outcome. Thanks, S
