First time trying a macro, probly not the best macro but best I could get with the kit lense (18-55)

Re: Macro
Nice pleasing shot for sure. A bit wide in that my eye doesn't really have a place to go and stay.
Flowers are deceptively difficult to shoot well. Pick an aspect of the flower (rather than a bunch of flowers) and study it fully to explore what it is that you like about it. Then try to put that thought into the shot. Both tasks can be hard enough on their own.
Keep shooting and keep posting.

Re: Macro
I agree with Loupey that flowers are harder than they look. Easy to get a 5/10, hard to get 8s or 9s. This one I like, it seems to glow and the differences between the deep green and violet are, IMO, awesome.
What hurts it is the distracting background in the right. There is nothing you could have done to prevent it using conventional methods, but I read once where serious flower photogs carry their own (big) panels of color cardboard and use them back there - out of focus - to cover up these things. A lot to lug around. But maybe you can ask a friend to come along and carry them and help set them up. They can also help block wind.

Re: Macro
Thank you both for the great reviews and information. I've only been shooting for a week, never really planed to do flowers but figured the more different types of shots I take the better I'll get. My goal is to eventually do wildlife and sports photography but being a single dad have to wait to get a longer lens, so far just have the kit lens and my new favorite my 50mm/1.8. Thanks again for looking!
