    Scottish Highlands, I

    Hello everyone

I had the opportunity to visit the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Highlands in March this year. The following photograph was taken near Kilmaluag.

I plan to try to sell my photographs from this trip (actually, this would be the first attempt at me trying to sell my photography!). So any helpful critique would be greatly appreciated!

    Kindest regards,
    Amaan Akram

I think that this would have been better from a wide point of view. It is a nice shot non the less

I like this, and the contrast is nice between the beautiful lighting and the dark cloud. Nice work. You might want to try cropping off the land off the bottom, just try it and see it out.

    Hi,
I love the colour and details of this shot. I am a bit unsure about the big dark cloud. Nice shot!

    Welcome, Amaan,
I agree with Jared that the foreground is uneeded. i would crop it out just below the rocks. Yoy has a point about his concern with the dark cloud, but, it can work ,I feel. nice image, good framing, but consider cropping most of the foreground.

    Re: Scottish Highlands, I

I think Jared's suggestion may work, but I also feel this ought to have been taken in landscape format. Whilst I think trying out portait deserves credit as it is the less obvious shoice, in this particular scene I feel like I've got unfinished business with the rocks on the left, and the land on the right, and so I have a nagging sensation that the picture is incomplete.

Beautiful scenery, and nice light - I love Scotland, really must get up there again soon.

    Regards,

    matt

Thank you all for taking the time to provide the valuable feedback

I took several shots of this location and a few were in landscape form too, but I preferred the portrait version. I do take your point about removing more of the foreground. I'll make the change to the final picture soon!

Following is the same shot but in landscape format.

thanks again for all the constructive critique!

Your landscape shot is much better IMO. A nicer foreground, and not so tightly croped togehter.

    Well done,

    Thanks jar_e.

The reason why I didn't choose the landscape version is because there's nothing in that image that my eye settles on--it keeps roaming around the place (now may be thats a problem with just my eyes). But in the portrait version, it settles squarely on the cliffs in the distance.

jar_e, for the sake of curiosity and exploring how others evaluate my work, could you tell me how your eye interprets the composition in the landscape version?

    thanks a lot

    Re: Scottish Highlands, I

My eye is attracted to two main things, well three, but one of them is minor. First it the shorline, cause the dark blue contrasted with the brown/green of the land is a nice contrast. Secondly, the dark cloud in the sky matches with the shorline perfectly, and applies the same reasoning. Finally, my eye tends to the bench, which is a nice addition to the foreground subject.

    That's how I see it,

    Jared

Yes, the landscape shot is far more appealing and well done on capturing some of our famous west coast weather!!

    Nice shot
