Lonely Bench

I was watching all the B&W work going on and liked it so much that I decided to try something with a shot that I thought would benefit. What works and what doesn't?

I like this one very much. My eye follows the boardwalk and searches for the end or where it leads to. The little break along the way, ie the little landing with the chair, aids the composition greatly.

I agree with Tom, its a lovely composition.

I feel it could do with a touch of curves adjustment to bring out the shadows a touch, especially in the surface of the walk way to give a bit of extra punch.

On the surface of the water just by the walkway there are either dust spots of something in the water which looks like dust spots which you may consider cloning out before printing. There are about three obvious spots.

JMO, but I'd think about cloning out the grass on the right border of the shot at the midway point.

Here's a version with some of the edits you guys recommended. I removed the dust spots (actually something floating in the water) and the grass.

readingr, I'm not completely sure what you're asking for. Should I try for more contrast on the walkway?

I copied the photo and adjusted the curves pulling down the shadows to increase the contrast in the wood which made it stand out better.

I couldn't do this with the bog standard Brightness and Contrast tool.

Dang, I didn't post the picture with the edits. I guess I got in too big of a hurry.

Nice shape and weight. As mentioned good leading line created by the dock which has a very complimentary texture that diminishes appropriately towards the vanishing point.

One compositional issue is the horizon at the top. It is blurry and doesn't match with the rest of the photograph as well as it might. I feel the photograph would be more complete and finished if it were not there.

I prefer this second version with the adjustments!

I really like this. It made my eye follow the boardwalk all the way to the end. The focus and exposure are good. It's tranquil and kind of a lonely scene at the same time.
