Late Night Fishing
Another from Little India in Singapore. I think that there are problems with this photograph and was really not sure whether or not I should post it. I'd like to remove the wooden object on the metal counter on the far right of the image but don't want to crop the figure in the shadows any further, the lights create an interesting light but do they add any value to the image themselves (plus they are really overexposed)...these are some of the questions I have faced over this image. Although nothing to be done, I also feel that some of the quality has been lost converting the file to meet the forum requirements. Saying that, I liked the composition and the overall scene, particularly the interesting lighting and the well guarded bucket of bank notes, the fish stacked high to the left of the image and the shoppers arms, would really welcome any input that you can offer. Please also feel free to edit this if you think that you can help!!
Many thanks!

Re: Late Night Fishing
I think it's excellent. Love the hands working on the left side and the guy that is oblivious to them on the bottom right. Having the light sources in the pic isn't that conventional but works here very well. This is very Magaziney IMO :) and I think you've captured it pretty well from a great angle that we don't normally see these things.

Re: Late Night Fishing
Thanks for your comments Leels and I am glad that you think it works.
Does anyone have any idea how I can do something to darken the two bright lights in PS?
Many thanks

You might try to lasso them one at a time and then lower the brightness. I'll give it a shot if you like?

Re: Late Night Fishing
Herriot, I think the point of view here is interesting as it is not common. The photos composition feels well balanced to me and there are lots of interesting things to hold ones attention to this.
The lighting here though is creating a very high contrast situation and I'm wishing to see more of whats going on below the lights and less of the lights themselves.
I gave this a rather simple edit, and I think it improves. I used the shadow/highlight tool in CS2 and increased shadow detail by 10 and reduced highlights by 10 ( there are other ways to do this, but this is a quick and usually effective treatment) I then cloned out the wood at the right, as I too did not feel cropping was the solution. Last, I applied a blue filter to reduce the yellow/orange cast of the lights. ( you could also use the color balance tool and reduce yellow in the mids and highs)

Re: Late Night Fishing
With Gary's edit, this image really pops, I can almost smell it :D
Unconventional, busy, and works great. Good composition, good lighting, overall good shot.

Re: Late Night Fishing
This is disgusting! It's gross! My gawd, you can smell it. This image is perfect just the way it is. I wouldn't change a thing!! I like the blown out lights, I like the colors, the contrast, the unusual attitude/perspective. This is really good. Creates an emotional, skin crawling reaction and that is what a good photo can do.
Really nice job! Wish I took it, but I couldn't be anywhere near this place.

Re: Late Night Fishing
All, thank you very much for your comments, I am surprised by some of the feedback but pleased that it works overall for those who have commented.
Gary - Thank you also for taking the time to edit the shot, I have never experimented with the filters in Photoshop but will certainly bear this in mind now for future reference. I think you have really added to the photograph so thank you again.
CF - Glad you liked it! I am sure you would manage to be here, the heat dispels any immediate odours, not that I was buying too much fish from these guys...!
Thanks again

Re: Late Night Fishing
Herriot,
I like Gary's rendition of this image, but I would keep the colour of the original for the fish so a selective blue filter may be a good idea on the man, and lights if your PS skills are up to it. I know mine wouldn't be.
Nicely captured.
