im new the forum and photo thing, i dont know much about anything except that i love taking and just veiwing photos, thought this would be a good place learn a little more about it and share some photos. thanks.
I wonder if that helmet is cumbersome to carry rather than wear?
That's not a critique. Of course he should probably be wearing his helmet. But please try to stay on topic in the Photo Critique forum. I sort of know who these kids are and they're probably either on their way to or from dirt jumps. They'll put on the helmets when they get there.
Welcome to the site, buddy! Happy to have you! And we can definitely help and encourage you.
I understand why you took this photo. It's one of those photos you just have to take. But so often they come out looking not so good. Is that how you felt about this one? There are two exposure problems here. One is the flash and the other is the sky. Balancing an exposure is a tricky thing - especially when flash is involved. Flash essentially adds a second exposure to your photo. The first thing to do is get the sky right. You do that by metering for the sky. I don't know what camera you're using or what exposure mode you' used. It would help if you could tell me. In any case, I would use my camera's histogram to make sure I'm not losing ny detail in the sky. The sky detail is key in this photo. It all revolves around that.
The next thing is the flash. It's too bright here. If this was my photo I'd want it to have the feel of the scene as I saw it. And I wouldn't see it with flash. So I'd want to use some flash to help show the riders, but not too much. Again, I don't know anything about the equipment you're using so it's hard to offer advice. But with my SLR and flash I'd turn down the flash exposure compensation so that the photo was still essectially dark, but there was a little bit more light on the riders. I don't want them bright. I want them dark. But not completely silhouetted.
So there's a beginning critique for you. Give us some more info on your equipment and how you feel about this photo and maybe we can help some more.
Of course I realize that if he has a helmet he probably wears it. Pardon me for making a comment (tongue in cheek) that wasn't a critique. I didn't realize that all comments had to be critiques. I'll go back to my lurking... This sure is a hard club to join!
thanks photo-john, as for the helmet thing, we arnt riding, were resting on the trail. for the camera stuff, it was my freinds camera i was using, jsut a point and shoot, so there isnt really much adjsutments on it, i kinda liked the way the flash exjaerated the riders and how you see the riders and the trail around them and darkness between them and the sunset, i dont know maybe im the only one who thinks the effect the flash had waa cool haha, but thats why i posted, to get a third party opion, so thanks
