first atempt at live band photos

i went to see my cuz's band ( www.thesiege.co.uk ) last nite and used it as practice for concert pics, the lighting wasnt the best as it was in a small venue and there light system wasnt the greatest.. any pointers for this style of photos
I used my canon 400d with a 50mm f/1.8 lens most of the pics ive had to crop as i was a little to far away for close ups

any help would be great !!

I know that lighting must be tough. Obviously next time the closer you could get I'd think the better. Did your results look pretty much like what you were seeing? I'll let the pro's chime in with their better advice.

They look a little dark, some judicious use of fill flash would probably help immensely, just enough to provide some more light but not enough to kill the mood or light system color.

Good choice of lens. I like the idea of a slight fill flash if it doesn't bother anyone in the band. And of course always try to get as close as you can.

You could also go for a bit of blur with a longer exposure-that would get you some mood in the images. As it is the band looks a little stiff.
    No, I DON'T need that.
