    Kiev Cathedral

    Hi all

I have been travelling about a bit this summer. One of the places was Ukraine. This image was taken in the main cathedral in Kiev. Apart from a tiny bit of light from above, the illumination is almost entirely provided by the candles.

    Cheers

    very nice low light shot,
focus seems a bit off, more on the candles than on her?

I would try a closer crop. It was a challenge to focus, I suppose.

The mood that this image creates is just awesome . I like the slightly sharper focus on the candlles .

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...

    Mike -

Like it, though I would like to see some different crops too, perhaps one that's zoomed in on the top of the candles and her face, clipping off the area above her forehead and the area below the top stems of the candles. She could be a bit sharper but when you handhold a camera in such conditions, you get whatever you can get

Maybe because I come from the Orthodox tradition, this image is very simple and powerful to me. I think all the technical details mean nothing to me on this one because the overall impact overrides it. I also think the expression on her face is great - somewhat sad and contrite. Orthodox often light the candles to remember those who have moved to the invisible Kingdom ...the passed ones ...so, the expression us just right.

    Re: Kiev Cathedral

Thanks guys. This was a pretty low light effort, and hand-held. The focus was on her face, but I agree it is a tad soft. Personally, I think I get away with it as the atmosphere and the soft candle-light is more important than the technical side. Still, I will have to play with it a little if I want to use it.

    Cheers
