You may have been bored, but at least you were channeling your boredom into practice.
If it were me, I think I would have had more space on the left and eliminated the spacing on the right of the shot....since the shoes appear to be heading to the bottom left, it gives them someplace to go. Also, you might want to change your focal point, as the heels of the shoes are in sharper focus than the front. To me, the focus should be on the toes, not the heels.
Thirdly....the tops with the laces are really dark, so you might want to bump exposure a bit. You'll probably get better advice from someone with a better eye than me, but this is how I'm looking at it. Hope I've helped a bit .

I think John summed it up well. Too tightly cropped, and the detail lost in the darker areas. Focal point/area limited. Was this auto focus? It probably locked onto the best exposed area of the sneaker. Whats good is the carpet/floor the shoes are on make a good bg, and there is nothing else in the picture distracting.
