It's been a while
I haven't posted in quite some time, but I'm back in the groove of school now. I took some pictures this summer a home that has been in my family for a little over a century. This is a view from the detached kitchen to the back of the main house. I realize that there are some blown out areas, but I hope they don't take too much away from the photo. Feel free to comment on anything else I could've done to improve this shot, or if it just doesn't work for you at all. Thanks :)

Re: It's been a while
Wow, strange shot. It is almost an abstract and also seems like an infared shot. I can barely make out the door ...
I sort of like it the way it is but it might also be good to only show the door and side shutters (?).
I'm not sure how else to change it!

Re: It's been a while
Unless I had read your description it would have taken me a little while to figure out what you had here. The problem I see is not so much the blown highlights but the composition. Not enough of the foreground to let me know where I'm at or what I'm looking through, and not enough view from the background to let me know what I am looking at. Not really sure how you could make this work compositionally. Seems to be a bit of a tricky angle.

Re: It's been a while
I think it's a pretty cool antiquey shot. It has an old rustic feeling to it that draws me in.

Re: It's been a while
Thanks for the comments guys... I think its one of those that works for me, but maybe not many others just because I know what it is and others don't at first. I kind of thought it might be weak because one does have to stare at it a bit to see what's there, and that's not usually good. I appreciate the input.

Oh I forgot to clarify GB, its wooden siding that surrounds the door. Square nails and everything. I'd like to post another that might be better compositionally. I'm not sure if it works even now, I personally don't care for the seriously dark border.

Meg,
I prefer this second one because of the way it is lit and the tones in the curtains are just great. That being said, I also appreciate the first one. It is a challenging picture because of it's abstract nature but there is something about it that catch my eyes. I am not too sure how I could further comment it. A strange shot in its own right but quite interesting to me.

Re: It's been a while
Yes, I also like the second shot. But I think it would have been better with a vertical format.
Try some changes to the first shot in PS, see what you get. It's already abstract, and adding some colors might make it really different.

Re: It's been a while
Thanks so much Seb, and GB, I agree about the vertical format. I do have them in color, so you guys can take a look. I think I'm going to end up doing a reshoot. Again, thanks for the input.

WHOA...
I am rather confused why you did what you did this.
As everyone else has mentioned it is very lt image difficult image to look at.
I think the original file is really good, and I like the mood it sets too.
You might be able to enhance the mood some by adding the shadow/silhouette.
What was your intent with this photograph as you have first presented it?

Re: It's been a while
i personally liked the first image . . . . i knew exactly what i was looking at without reading the discription. i really like the lack of colour. it looks like a scene out of a somber, creepy dream, almost haunted. i almost wish i could just wake up, but i'm little excited.

I was thinking the exact same thing!
Second is much better. Now I know what I'm looking at. I, too, like the rustic look. I'm a sucker for old houses in b/w. The second one gives me the feel of what it might have been like back in the day. But again, a vertical format would have done the trick here. I like the color version of the 2nd one as well.

Re: It's been a while
Well i had no idea what it was until i saw your colored shots... I like the second photo you posted of the window better. The first one is very confusing....
Im sure you could find an interesting angle to get a few cool shots of the door from outside but the window curtains and everything kind of took away from the door and made it confusing...

Re: It's been a while
Thanks everyone for the comments. Just to answer a few things... my intent on this one was to capture the strange view. I looked out the window and saw a door, not a landscape, so it just seemed unique to me. In the same breath, I will agree with you guys that the shots are just not good enough because the image didn't communicate what I wanted it to. I'm going to do a reshoot at some point, try some new angles, make it vertical, and see what I can get. Thanks again for the critique.
