To my opinion you have managed great DOF. Second photo the colours are more natural looking.A little too much shade which causes the photo to lose it's effect.

I think you've done a good job of getting more out of the orignical with Photoshop but the overall photo is to busy to me. There is a lot going on with no real focuses. The rocks kind of lead you into the building but the amount of hillside overpowers this. A different angle perhaps?

I would be interested to see some photos of what appears to be a mill in the background.

Thanks Berrywise, I'll try to rezise one of the mill for you. But because of the restricted areas where I could stand, the photo isn't great. LOL at the end of that bridge would be a perfect shot at it but the wall is way to high for me. I'm short! :)

Piet thank you too. I appreciate the feedback.

    You Go Lara...
The second one is technically better. The adjustments you made make it pop!
Aesthically, you are developing a good eye Lara!
The line from the rocks and bridge are a good use composition.
    Right On!

    Very close to the mark...
This is a real nice shot, Lara. Yes, between the natural and manmade elements, there is a great deal of visual information here, but I think you do a good job of arranging everything into a fairly strong composition.

You've kept the structures at angles, which gives the scene depth, as the rock wall leads us into the shot, and the other buildings recede further back. Many shooters have trouble learning to do this...

As others (and you) have already said, a higer shooting angle would have made the shot better, as the middle structure partially obscures what looks like an interesting mill of some sort. Also, a slightly overcast day or earlier (or later) sun would have probably given you better lighting, eliminating those deep shadows that take away from the center area.

Your ps work is good, giving the shot a little more pop without overdoing it...

Where was this taken? And is it a place that you can return to to shoot again?

I think this is quite good. I like the way the wall leads you into the shot. IMHO the original is the better of the 2 and doesn't need any improvement. You've lost a lot of the detail in the shot and the the second seems harsh. Don't fix what ain't broke. :D

    Lara,

THE PS version is losing detail in the highlights, notice the harsh clouds and the fence compared to the original. I think a midtone boost, albeit a slight one, would have benefitted this image more than the highlight adjustment.

It's a pretty cool landscape, but as a whole it doesn't hold me, I just want to get closer to the mill.

Okay here are a couple of the mill. As I mentioned I couldn't get into a really favorable position. I can't climb around as I'd like to be able to. But here goes. :)

Oh and I plan to get down that path and take a closer shot when I am able. Maybe in the fall when the foliage will be pretty.

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate the honest critique. :)

Steve this is Saugus Iron Works. A historical site. I can go there any time. I really wanted to go down that hill and take some shots. Perhaps I'll try again like I said in the fall. Should be very pretty then.

You are using foreground elements well for framing the shot and directing the eye. Nice work.

Thank you Chunk. I learn a little each time I make the effort to go out and shoot.

I really like the original post. The ps version adds some pop, but somewhere in the middle between the two would work well. I like the composition alot. The rocks leading into the middle of the scen and the tree on the right framing . For me, it holds my interest and keeps me looking at all the elements in the scene.
I also like the second shot in the second set of posts. As chunk stated, great use of Foreground elements.
    Good work

Second pic of the second post is excellent, I love the way the fence leads you into the photo.

My main critique is that the fence looks a tad overexposed, perhaps a little work in ps could bring out some detail.

    Good work

I agree about the ps work Gary. My bad for using my laptop instead of my pc. I'm looking at the photos right now on my pc and see that I could have worked it better.

Thank you for your comments! It helps a lot.

Thank you. I'm glad you like. :)

You're absolutely right Lee! The glare of the fence wasn't so noticable on my laptop. Another lesson learned. :)
