    Inspired by Japanese Prints

My folks always had Japanese prints on the walls when I was growing up (for that matter they still do). I have always liked that sort of misty pale look with just a few elements and colors.

Foggy sunrises are pretty common around here. Anyway after quite a few attempts this is what I got......I'm wondering if this is too dark for that print look I'm trying for.

MB, fundamentally I think it's a nice shot, and I like what you were going for here. The branches hanging down obscure and dominate the upper half though, IMO. Plus the angle of the wall or whatever separating the waters is distracting and kind of takes your eye off the focal point of the shot.

It would make a really beautiful piece of fabric for a kimono....is it a composite of images? the top of the monument is cut off a bit by the edege of the reflecting pool...or was there a puddle of whatever at the edge of the pool? just wondering...the colors are perfect for what you were trying to achieve...the horizon is a bit tilted but it doesn'ty really distrcat from the overall image....pretty successful I'd say...

Now that I think about it all three of my recent posted images were shot at foot level.

This is the Washington Monument reflected in the Tidal Basin and a Cherry Tree branches reflected in a puddle on the sidewalk so the dark line you see is the edge of the sidewalk. I don't think the horizon is actually tilted since the Monument is vertical-what's making it look that way is that there are no straight lines at the Tidal Basin, only curves.

I'm pretty happy with this image but am sure to go back there some morning.....

    MB1,

I think you achieved what you were after; it has an ethereal feel to it. My only thought is the vertical line and horizontal line are both too close to the middle. It also would be nice to see the top of the monument in the reflection. All that being said it is still a good print.

    Regards,

    Phil

It does have a Japanese feel to it. The colors, symmetry, and may I say the loniliness of the shot seems to match the Japanese style. I'm not sure I can get past the tilt of the pool's wall there however. I think it might have been even more powerful as a super wide-angle shot, perhaps several shots stitched together? I like the (apparent) reflection of the trees.

Just beautiful. So many layers, different textures, serene colors. I see the inspiration. Overall, I love it.

I agree that the tilt takes away from it. Appears to be perspective distortion, you kept the horizon level, but had the camera rotated just a little to the right. Easily fixed with Photoshop's perspective correction tools though.

The horizon can be easily straightened in post-processing. The "whatever" that makes the dark line across the photo however is a major problem. It is also fixable in Photoshop but requires more work, time, and a little artistic talent.

Ronnoco,,you will find the horizon is horizontal...The angle of the "whatever" gives the image an illusion of not being straight..

The horizon line is certainly not clear in the photo, but I think you are right. The angle line does give the image an illusion of not being straight. Sharp eye.

    Another look at it.

I like my first image with the reflection of the sky and leaves but I do like the reflection of the monument here.

MB1 - Seems you've solved the tilt problem but lost the wideness Gives you a good reason for a reshoot

I think you're right! I just assumed it was the same. Oh well.

Still could use a reshoot with a super wide angle

It's beautiful. I know this is a forum that solicites critique, but to me, there's nothing blaring to critique. It's just artistic opinion rather than academic compsition if anything were to be said.

I leave it alone. This is a good, beautiful, multi layered photo that causes your eyes to move over the entire photo, as any good photo should, in my eyes.
