    Hula Hoop

Taken this afternoon - not sure what to think of it. Any comments/suggestions? Worth keeping?

interesting shot but looks like it has too much contrast on my monitor. the shirt is blown out and the grass in upper areas are too dark.

Thanks mjm. I agree about the blown-out highlights - I missed the exposure on this one but thought the shot itself as possibly savable. Here is a slightly less contrasty, lighter version. Any better??

still too strong for my tastes... the pose and angle are really good, perhaps you can shoot this one again? getting the little girl to look up would be sweeeeeeeet.

Thanks for the comments, mjm. I WANT there to be a certain amount of high-contrast appearance and it's really not my intent to show the eyes. I was hoping for more of a impersonal, graphical representation of the action. Does it work in that manner?

For those who need to see the eyes, there's this one...

Tuna, the shot is great (first one) yes, there is a bit of a blow out on the highlights, but this is savable- the contrast is what MAKES this shot! The high contrast in your shot is critical for this kind of pic- great great job on that! Sometimes when my highlights are blown I bring down the lightness and then adjust the contrast as necessary. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not.
If you're using photoshop you can adjust selective color- and select white, then on the black scale, move the slider towards the negative or positive end to adjust the trueness of the white (sometimes it will darken and bring the blow out down.
(If this is not making sense, I can post a screen shot in PS)
Anyhow, the way it stands in your first shot is just wonderful nonetheless. Great job.

This is a great image. I like your use of space, higher contrast and point of entry into the photo. Shooting from above creates good design between the girl, hoop and the remaining space. For me the fact that the young girl is not looking up only adds to the strength of design. If she were looking up her face would become too predominate to the photograph. Nice Image.

    the second

2nd one is better than the first ---I'd still lift a little in some of the areas.... if there's possibility on the original to recrop then maybe add some breathing space to the right and bottom of the shot. I like that the shot is about the hula hoop and the action and that the girl becomes the "accesory" to the shot...instead of the standard girl with hula hoop playing...blah blah blah...
it also has almost a graphic pen and ink sort of feel to it which I like...

This has energy like an uncoiling spring. The athletic pose and the high contrast give us something that is more abstract form than portraiture. Having all that action near the edge gives it an 'edgy' feel (imagine that ).

I like the relaxed pose of her hands while all her body is taught. Is she a dancer?

Tuna, I like the original shot for the contrast. It almost is an abstract in a way. . .to me. She , and her hula hoop, is really a sort of design against the grass. . bg. I like the sharp contrast.
