Green Spikes

At least it's not a flower......:)
I liked the way the light was hitting it, so I took the shot.

I see what you're getting at. some parts of this photo work and there are a few elements that i think detract from the vision of the shot.

the spikes work, nice and sharp, great shap, i like how they are coming from in between the two leaves.

i don't like the tip of the 2nd leaf crossing in the spikes, it goes through your subject and kind of takes it off course. i also wish the base of the spikes was a bit further away from the two leaves. right now it is right on top of the further leaf. other than that, the colours are also great. nice lush green.

I would like a closer crop of the spikes, and try to avoid the top of the foreground leaf

I have a tighter crop from another shot, not sure if I like the incomplete arch of the leaf at the top.

The second crop is better. I think it is more about the subject.

Snoid - Yes, I agree that you're on to something.

However, here's what I believe about out-of-focus areas in a photo, esp flower/macro shots. Background blur is great. Foreground blur usually is not; it often distracts from the image and looks like a mistake. I think that's what is happening in the bottom shot and slightly less so in the upper one.

Try some expts to see if your shots look better w/o bg blur only. Electrons are free :)
