Looks like your camera exposed more for the sky than the fisherman. Tough to balance these kind. His face is to dark and lacks detail. But I like the photo...

what is "real" photographic value.. it captured a special moment in time.. is that of no "photogrpaphic" value.. it also had to capture it on the spot and with the equipment available.. its also simply amusing.. he he

"photographic" value to me, in the artsy sense, means other people looking at the photo and drawing some sort of appreciation for it. This is a snapshot. There's nothing special here. no leading lines, no amazing color, a blown out sky, and looks like anything a kid with a point and shoot camera could do.

yep.. but to me that is still of photographic value.. just another kind of it.. and if the kid takes enough "snaps" he might even get one that looks a bit "artistic"..

Ron, please do not use a members thread to call someone out on their grammar. Please keep any comments relevant to the subject of trogs thread.

trog, is it critique that you wanted? I too think it is an amusing shot, but it has many faults that will keep it from being a "great shot". The blown out sky, the under exposed face of the subject etc. I believe you called one of your sunset pictures, that I commented on , a snapshot yourself. Case in point that there can be some very good "snapshots"
This is certainly not a picture to throw away, by no means. It does have good qualities as Mr. Yuck addressed, but certainly there is room for improvement here and hopefully that is what you are after by posting it here.

Trog, I just want to point out and reiterate what Gary said in the sense that this is not a throw away picture. I think it is a fine picture for memories, and I would most definitely keep it if that were my friend, as well as make prints of it. It's a great friend picture, I just think it's not the artsy type of shot that the critique forum is better known for.

As a fisherman and a photographer, I see no value in it except as a snapshot, Trog. I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Livin that it is a snapshot. It might make a scrapbook, but it wouldn't make my portfolio or go up on my wall.

now if it was someones baby i am sure it would get a few ooos and ahhs.. i think some of u guys need to lighten up a bit..

Generally the critiques forum is a more serious one. Yes, there are lighthearted images posted here, but images that are generally posted here are here for the critical eye to review them.

Plenty big, a little salt and a cracker... :thumbsup:

The shot makes me grin, I dont know the area or the fisherman, but I know the feeling when the biggest fish you catch in a day is just bait.

Some possible improvements:
--turn around so the main source of lighting is on the subject's face, but watch out for a background, maybe if you took the shot on the other shore so you had the shot behind you.
--try a fill flash, though sometimes this makes the subject look "pasted" on.
