    Ship Ahoy!

Hi all .. one of two images I'm posting today, both from the forum day out in London last Saturday.

This is just something I came across. It is a reworked version of one I put on Viewfinder.

The light was somewhat harsh - the trick here was to control the contrast. Whether it succeeded is up to you!

    Cheers

    Re: Ship Ahoy!

I think you pulled off the harsh condition. The light is not flattering here but the details in the shadows are there and nothing is blown away so you nailed it. I do like the long shadow thrown on the wall of the subject walking, so the lighting worked in that sense.
My only suggestion for this already good image would be to crop a sliver off from the left side to rid of the highlighted edges alnog the frame. they seem to pull my eye away and out of the image.
I liked this in the Viewfinder thread, and not sure what you did differently here but still like it alot now.

I too really liked it in the view finder thread. I love the man walking by and as Gary noted, the shadow of the man is very nice. I also like that we have a good idea of the size of the boat because the man walking and the man / statue in the boat are about the same size. If not for the composition, we would not know this. As for the colors, I like them. They look very natural. I don't see anything to crop out. Great job.

    Re: Ship Ahoy!

    hello Mike,

I like the photograph and I like the idea even more. I hope you don't mind my edit here, it is a rough one just to show what I would have done. I think cropping off the right would even be enough leaving only the shadow on the photo, However, here I have gone one step further and moved both the man and his shadow to the left. In my opinion, the ship calls for a centered position. I wish the column faces on the left were on the photo.

I reduced a bit of the red tones in your original as well.

I hope this all makes sense to you too.

I like this image, I can't tell you why but I find it neat.

    How can I be lost

While I am no expert, your edit ruined it for me. Perhaps it's as simple as I like the wide / panoramic view, but I am sure it's just me.

    Re: Ship Ahoy!

Thanks guys, as always. While I don't mind Engineer playing with the picture, I do think the horizontal format is important - it gives it a diagonal between the man on the boat and the man on the street, which I think it compositionally necessary. I do agree with Gary though about a sliver off the left, and I have now done this on my master. It's only a little thing, but it improves it I think.

Just as with Tuna and Gary no one can argue about your compositional skills. I like the original and everything in the image is perfectly placed. The windows on the right help balance the image, Nice work Mike.

    Re: Ship Ahoy!

I too prefer the original format because the ship and the shadow are now centered which I feel leaves this heavy in the center. I do not think it is too bad, but not better than the original.
I think it's important that we first ask permission before editing another members photo unless they have the ok in their thread or signature.
I know the intent was solid and positive, especially appreciating the amount of time and effort you put in moving over the man and shadow. Technically well done.

    Re: Ship Ahoy!

engineer .. no problem - I personally never mind at all if people are interested enough, and provided it is done in the right spirit. Some people do mind though so it's probably good advice not to do so unless permission is specifically given.

I like the range of colours and the shadow is interesting. The edit makes it more compact and neater I'd say. Just my opinion.
