First attempt at lightning

This is my first attempt to capture lightning .
Could you give me more advice please ? And any critique ?

Shutter speed was 8s
Aperture f 4

I'd say good attempt for first try on lightning, wish I could say mine was as successful as yours, but it wasn't. As for the picture, I would have to say you definitly need another subject, my personal preference is over looking a city, but that's just me. Another thing is the light source from the bottum left hand portion of the picture really detracts from the picture. I'd say overrall though, it was a good picture especially for your first try. And also remember, I am a very amatuer photographer so listen to everyone else before me, it's just my initial thoughts. Good luck!

yeah, I would agree that I would like to see something under it,be it woods or a city or what-have-you

Great shot for the first time for trying lightning. As noted, a more interesting subject matter is needed. Great purplish colors though!

It dont take much to impress me with lightning shots....I have never been able to get one....I would love for someone to post a lesson on how to photograph lightning. I understand that a city would be a great backround....But how do you not overexpose the city and then catch a bolt on top of it all .....I know it is not easy....but holy moses ....That would be like winning the lottery.

I will look next time for a better spot with something else in the background .Did not actually think of that Thanks .

And with Mr U , i would appreciate it a lot if someone with lightning photography experience will help on the city as background shots ?
