A few rides

Just wondering what y'all thought

Ooh I do enjoy that first one! You have captured the fun (and risk!) of mountain biking, and showed us some magnificent scenery to boot. Not only that, but you have managed to keep the whole thing pretty sharp while maintaining a pretty decent composition. Very nice and I can't think of anything to make it much better considering the type of photo it is. Maybe lightening the rider's face a tad, but that's about it.

Nothing wrong with the second one - but it doesn't push the buttons quite like the first one does.

I like the drama of the second shot and it has me wondering if this is going to end in tears

I was wondering how the EMS will get to you if it goes wrong !
I prefer the scenic shot on the edge of the canyon over the descent.

Both look soft though, I expect artefacts of the compression to get it down to this size for the web.

Definitely the rider's face in the descent needs lightening, the shadow's too deep there.
But I wouldn't want flash drowning out the rest of the shadow, so a snoot maybe?

I'd like to have seen more of that path on the canyon edge, and for my nerves your rider farther away from the rough stuff and the big drop ! The path disappears behind the bushes, and reappears only briefly on the right edge, and is barely visible in the background.
It could be another element in this already great composition.

The 2nd one works better for me. Nice dynamic. Although i wish the face was better lit. More action than the first one which is a pose kind of shot. Good stuff.

thanks for the feedback, feel like i'm hitting the wall with a P&S and quick draw action on my rides, hard to slow down and shoot at times

yeah a flash might work, and my limited skills with picsa have a lot to be desired just love kicking around this forum and try to lurk and try and learn =)

I agree w/ Mike that the first (top) image works in just so many ways - scenery, movement, great smile on the rider... it depicts a summer time scene where everyone's having fun. I also feel that the second doesn't push the same buttons as the first, though the element of danger is certainly there. I just like the relaxing moment of the first.

P&S cameras are OK for when you don't want to carry a DSLR, but as you see here with the softness, which happens when you can't control the shutter speed, it is time to move up. If you can afford it I would do that sooner rather than later so not to miss any pix!
