What a great day to be at the beach! The silo of the model is too "tied to" or blends too much with the shape of the beach. One could almost mistake him/her as a part of the landscape.
Nobody ever said it would be easy!!!

Great mood and lighting, composition is ok, but as stated the position of the person is too lost in the dark area. Had the person been standing out further and more towrds the water would have made a great silhouette. A good scene

I agree with the others. Also, you might want to have considered (if the person was willing to stand still, or if you were shooting RAW) stacking a few images so that you could get the full dynamic range of the real scene.

Have you tried adding a small bit of fill flash using Paint Shop or Photo Shop? I tried it and got better separation. I selected the dark area and then added the flash only to the selected area. It did give an improvement, but left a few artifacts.

You might want to try cropping from the bottom, as the horizon doesn't really work running directly through the center of the photo, especially since it's not level. You might also try a warming filter effect, which might add to the emotional impact of the photo.

    flashfill

Some flash fill might have brought the foreground and the man out from the darkness a little more. Just a suggestion. It's a little stretch for most flashes unless you're shooting at a fairly high ISO setting (800+)

Thanks to all for you're suggestions & comments.
I will try the the suggestions that i can, and keep
in mind the others for the next time.
btw, this is a scan of a print, the film is fuji 400.
a scan of the film should have more detail.
    Thanks again for you're input,
