    Eat

It always makes me laugh to see an "Eat" sign. ... sounds like what a mother would tell her 2 year old kid, that is. Probably not many of them in business anymore (this one wasn't), but they don't seem in any hurry to take the signs down ... good for me, since I like photographing them !

Taken south of Lone Pine, CA along the 395 highway. B&W, or color? I had to warm up the color one a little. Both lack "pop" but not sure what to do to add it (?)

    Re: Eat

I'm kind of torn but I like the one in color more. I think if the top right of the b&w picture wasn't so dark it would look a lot better. the sign is just so dark.

    Re: Eat

color for sure, the lack of saturation and "dry" feeling I get exemplifies the aged sign and closed business. I think it's a fantastic photo as is, but have you tried to get rid of the power line?

I think I prefer the color one as well. Very nice.

    Re: Eat

I like the color one much better. If I were nitpicking, I'd want the power line gone and a little more light on the sign. But I think the color does a good job in providing a sense of abandonment and desperation.

    Re: Eat

I think both can work but I think with more editing the b/w one would be my preference, especially if you can get that sign to stand out better.
I also am glad you left the power line in as it adds more than distracts from the desolation feel.

    Re: Eat

MB1, I came to look at these pictures again from my work computer and they look completely different. My home computer isn't very up todate and has a very old monitor. The b&w isn't as dark as i thought. I think if the picture was just more saturated it would look better.

good job though! cool picture. I agree with the motherly feel of the sign. Maybe they just wanted to remind all the truckers to EAT!

    GB,

I would prefer the utility lines were not there, but going with the theme of the picture they somehow fit. The whole EAT concept makes me laugh. Good job!

    Re: Eat

Thanks guys. As mentioned, this was a 'fun shot' of a very comical scene you see out here in the deserts (and probably on the east coast too). Another are "Food" signs. LOL. :P

I agree - the shot would just work so much better if I can better illuminate the sign. I did use a polarizer, which darkened the sky. That is sometimes a double-edged sword. It was only about 9 am but that is often far too late for good photography in areas with little or no clouds (indeed, the 'golden hour' lasted all of about 35 minutes for each of the three sunrises when I was out there ).

I agree that the color seems more pleasing. Frog is the desentor here. I think it has potential, but needs something: perhaps to be taken with FILM !! (I still think Black and White film is superior to digital b&w.)

I will try an edit w/o the power (and small telephone) lines and see. Look for my post on this thread. But I think the lines sort of identify with the run down area.

Marco - I know... my home and work computers have significantly different looks. I need to calibrate them (what's sad is I've often commented on people's posts saying "this is too dark/light" and then liked it better the next day on another monitor). 1/3 of an f stop can change the whole feel of the shot.

Thanks Papa. I will be a film fan for the rest of my days though I do admit that digital has come a long way.

Here is the color image with the "Eat" sign brightened up a bit ..

    Now that's a loaded question!!

It was a minor bit of humor concerning the 'love of film' guys editing their photos digitally.
No dis-respect intended. I love film too.

    Re: Eat

GB1, bit late here, but I agree with JonW's comments above and think the edit definitely improved, I like the slight boost in color on the sign. I still think (as JonW originally mentioned) removing the powerline would be nice, or at least removing the small bulge in the left third of the powerline. Overall I like image

    Re: Eat

Thanks fellows -- due to popular request, no power/telephone lines. I did add a slight texture to the pic though, just because it looked so plain w/o it (... due to me needing to slightly smooth out the area of the cloned lines with a smart blur). It might work as an album cover now ... with some text in the upper left side area. Or maybe a menu cover at a throwback burger joint?

I guess I prefer the color myself.

Thks Lori. Where have you been lately?

There was an "Eat" place still open out in Borrego Springs until last year .. I guess the recession did it in.

    Re: Eat

I'm happy to say I have been busy working! I have a long weekend shoot in Nashville this week, good racing so it will be fun too. Im glad to be back here though!
As for the "eat" my great uncle lived in a small (TINY) farm town Called Elroy WI, I loved going there, the restraunant said Eat (on the sign) the ice cream place was called Dairy, Bar, Moive Theater, Barber and the like lol I was a kid but in hindsight, a photogs dream! I love your shot.

For what it's worth, then just the thin telephone lines should be taken out... the thick cable actually added to the photo... other than that... I couldn't make up my mind on which I prefer... so i won't!
