Down by the water ..
Another from my boat shoot. The fog made a difference I think, as I've found that boats are harder to shoot than they SEEM they should be! C&Cs welcome,

Re: Down by the water ..
I like the subdued colors caused by the fog.
I still have trouble with masts leading off frame but not as much in this one.

Re: Down by the water ..
love the coloring on this...... i like how something so simple can look so beautiful just because of the lighting....

Re: Down by the water ..
Like you I find taking pictures of boats really difficult and still waiting for that perfect capture.
My problem with this shot is the clutter, to many boats. I am getting to the conclusion that my best shots have one or two boats in the picture so less is more.

Re: Down by the water ..
Great color in this one, but I agree with readingr that this shot seems very busy. Not really thrilled about the group that's all tangled up in the rigging of the main subject, or the transoms poking into the right side foreground. Boats can be really difficult to shoot, especially in low light (much like kids, they won't stand still for even a second).

Re: Down by the water ..
This photo has a nice peaceful feeling to it and I like the subdued colors and fog. I think I would like a little more room in the front for the reflection and maybe moving to the right a little bit to get rid of the boat intruding on the right. I suspect if you moved more to the right, the boat would have been too straight on though.
When I look at this photo with about an inch cropped off the top, the cropped mast doesn't lead my eye out of the photo as much.

Re: Down by the water ..
I like the tranquility in this. If I could I'd lose the rope and possibly have the total reflection of the front of the yacht in the water. Very nice scene. S

Re: Down by the water ..
thanks !
Tracer, shootme - I shot this at least a month ago, and I am not sure why I didn't include the entire reflection of the boat in the frame (pilot error more than likely).
Jet, Roger - I agree that it's a bit cluttered in the back there but like you I don't think it's fatal, it would just be better if they weren't there. Hmm. A PS cloning project maybe?
I also want to do a little 'surrealism' PP on this image - something even more moody that what's here.
Frog, I agree, the poles leaving the frame is a negative. But not sure what else to do because they're so tall that only a horizontal format would capture them, and that sort of changes the entire feel of the shot (I know, I have a few shots like that.. they just aren't the same). Maybe it's because tall shots feel 'unstable' vs a wide shot that feels more solid and placed (I think I've been reading too much Frank Lloyd Wright theory).
Ambrya - Thanks. Drive by this area most every morning on the way to work, so I have good pick of different weather and lighting. On a good day I stop n shoot, but I've missed some good shots too, being too busy to stop :(
More work to do on this one ...........

Re: Down by the water ..
Yeah, I haven't figured out any solutions to the masts thing. Never shot boats like this and can see how its not as easy as it would seem.

Re: Down by the water ..
Tried a little darker version as a creative expt. Not sure .. seems moody, maybe too much so?

Re: Down by the water ..
Beautiful shot. Very peaceful.
I would clone out the clutter on the right edge.
I don't mind the missing mask at all.

Re: Down by the water ..
Give me mood!!! The repost with your post processing work rocks but, I agree with shootme on the ropes in the foreground and that boat on the right -- they gotta go!
Thank you for sharing this one with us.
My Best to You,
Penny

Re: Down by the water ..
Thanks everyone. I was expecting negative reactions to the edit, like uuuuuuuh, too much sienna coloring and verboten feeling. I guess there's many possibilities here.
I will try cloning the right side there.

Re: Down by the water ..
I like the first one best -- to me, the colors of the second one look more like smog rather than fog.

Yep, you're right. There's just too much gray and brown in there to be appealing.
Another edit - does this one work? Notice the right side boat is history (took about 15+ minutes to clone out) and adjusted the colors and density a tad.
G
Edit - I'm not super happy about where the boat's vertically placed in the frame, a bit too close to the center for me, but if I move it down as I'd like to, the reflection gets clipped. :(

Re: Down by the water ..
Big improvement with the distractions removed from the right, and a very moody feel to this with the vignetting, I like it.

Re: Down by the water ..
Wow! Now that's nice.
I would print this one.

Re: Down by the water ..
Nice work and it is so much better.

Re: Down by the water ..
Thks guys. Someone else out here pointed out that I forgot to remove the buoy and line that the (cloned out) boat used. I will have to do that! Bob, I think I will print this one out and see what I have. I hope the film grain isn't too noticeable.
