Portrait of a half eaten cookie

I met a food photographer a long time ago and he told me how paint and glue (for milk) are often used to create colors better for food photography. This one is all natural. I did this with no flash, no tripod, natural light plus overhead incandescent light bulbs. This was done with a Canon SX200IS super zoom pocket camera. I had it on manual, it was shot at 100 ISO, f 3.4, 1/40 s, 6.1mm focal length(36mm equivalent for 35mm) I then cropped and sharpened. I didn't tweak much else. I wish the cookie was a little sharper. I was REALLY EXCITED about this shot but then the sugar high wore off. I wanted it to be appetizing to the viewer. It really makes me appreciate the work that goes into this type of shot, and the equipment used.

I think the two (very) different light sources wreaked havoc on the white balance. I don't know if it will work with a global adjustment, but I think the colors need to be slightly tweaked (to get the milk from green to white). I would also rotate the picture CW just a tad. I think it could be sharper/have a higher DOF, too.

Looking at this is making me crave some cookies now....

I think a brighter light might better achieve your goal. I certainly am no expert, but blue (the background) and food usually don't go well together. I must admit though, I do want a cookie now!

Re: Portrait of a half eaten cookie

Does a portrait have to include a face? I have to complete a portrait project for my photography class, and I was just wondering about this. Most of the time, a portrait includes the model's face and captures his/her emotions on camera. However, can a picture with other parts of the body also be called a portrait?

From the web definitions and my own understanding, I think the common understanding of a portrait would include a face. Be safe and just ask the instructor to clarify. Please post your results and tell us how it went -- and welcome to PR!

I think brighter too. But other than that, you made me crave chocolate chip cookies and that is point of food photography.

All opinions expressed by this person are purely that, opinions which means she doesn't actually know anything about photography.
