    Egg Basket

Yesterday, first testing of my “new” E500 and shot almost 400 pics most of them at a train museum and got this photo. It has not been retouched, only resized to fit our forum constraints. What do you think?

    Re: Egg Basket

Very interesting subject as my eclectic nature likes a little of everything -- especially old things! Compositionally, I would like to see more window on the left -- of course, I don't know what negatives you may have had to avoid. Though the fine mesh of the old screen next to the wide mesh of the basket messes with my head a little, I like it. What I don't like is the red thing and the yellow line thing. You did a good job blurring the background, but a little less clutter would have been a bonus -- however, I do think the picket fence in the background is a plus. The focus on the eggs is a little soft but I do like your lighting. Did you sharpen after resizing? I recently learned that's the best way to do it and it does seem to help.

    Re: Egg Basket

    Paula,
Not much thinking went on for this shot it was a very casual shot when I was passing by this subject but I noticed that it was moving with the breeze going through the window mesh so I shoot it with a flash fill also to compensate for the outside light so I guess the soft focus one can see on the eggs and basket is due to it moving despite the flash.

No sharpening was done after resizing but I do plan to work the image with LR and see what develops and hope some of the issues you found will be partially corrected, thanks for your nice comments.

    Re: Egg Basket

I wont comment on the composition since this is a grab shot, regarding the PP work on LR I think that the last image is a bit over saturated and looses a bit the natural look, I might suggest to aim for a blend between the last two images.

Start with the second one as base point. Just adjust the white balance, and maybe add a tad of light plus the sharpening.
You can also play with some de-saturation on the colors in the background (greens/yellows), this will "bold" the first plane.

It's out of focus and the background is quite busy. Interesting subject though.

I do like the pop it now has -- but it may be just a bit overdone. Your pp skills are way ahead of mine!

I like the edit of #2, though would have had the camera a little lower when taking the shot. Outside of that it is an interesting shot well done.

interesting subject, but the screen in the back kills it for me.

    Re: Egg Basket

Going back in circles I guess.
The third pic you posted was the best IMO. The white balance and tonal range was good. Now on this last one all that is gone.
My initial suggestion was to de-saturate a whisker the colors from that image (3rd one).

    Re: Egg Basket

Guess this would be a desaturated 3rd and hope will be more to the liking for most of you guys and gals, but you be the judge. Actually not much more can be done with LR thinking on a regular image since the original (first post) is actually not good.

    Happy shooting

    Re: Egg Basket

This seems to be back to what your second edit was and which is the best edit, IMO.

    Re: Egg Basket

Thanks Paula, yes it seems I’m going in circles as Rob said… guess this image wont deliver more natural manipulation with LR…its a poor image to start with so I think I’ll live it as is for the moment and take another image to work with,

    Happy shooting
