The Dawn of a New Day

Critique please.All aspects. White balance set at 2500K. Is this a good setting for white balance in low light? If not what are recommended standards for white balance, low light situations? If any ?

What do you think about the star light effect.I achieved this with aperature control only.No star filter.

I like the blue tint to the picture, the placement of the lamp post it perfect and I like the detail in the foreground. The lamp post is a little distorted but I find that pleasing in some shots. How did you expose the distant lights without blowing out the lamp? I never have like the star filter either. I have read that if you count the rays of light and multiply that by two and that is how many blades are on your shutter, I guess 12 on yours? But I am not sure of that. I am glad to see you hangin out more in the critique forum I always enjoy your pictures. You sure take a lot of them. Are you retired? Great work on this one.

Like Greg, I find the blue tint appealing, but unlike Greg I am not crazy about the lightpost distortion. I don't know if cropping it out would make the shot better though. It adds some balance. JMHO.

i aint sure we should be painting the world any colour we like but thats just old fashioned me..

The blue would be caused by the WB temp being set so low. Sunlight's WB temp is 5150 (go figure..the same number that denotes mental instability lol) or around there so this WB setting really brings out the blues and lowers the reds and oranges a lot which would normally dominate a sunrise shot like this.

I like what you've done here though. The blue really stands out obviously and the composition is very pleasing. The star effect is something I have always liked. I have never used a star filter either. Just one more thing to add to the bag in which there is already no room lol.

course the real question here is.. was the original intention to paint the world any colour u like.. if so yes its a nice pretty blue u have chosen..

or was the orignal intention to produce an image vaguely resembling what the original scene looks like as the sun comes up.. or as the title suggests the dawn of a new day..

from the critiique point of view the anwser to the question is quite relevant..
