The second one is too flat. Great picture Dray, I would have liked to see the Wein either behind him on the dark room(?) with the red gel to give some seperation, and some color contrast (his blue shirt). Or if you keep it where it is, I think the red is too strong, I would have gone with a CTO (although, I wouldn't have thought of it at all, which is why your pictures look like this, and I'm still trying to get mine to look even half as good...). I was afraid of that! I just saw the image on the violin maker's display; way too light and nowhere near enough contrast.

Great idea about the lighting. I actually thought of that, too, but not until I was looking over the raw images! But I'll keep the separation light in mind for next time. Yeah, CTO might have been better. I could change the color in PS, though.

As for the quote, I'll just say that a lot of stuff was added, skewed, shifted around, or resized.... only because I truly can't remember half of what I did. The foreground violin was added from another shot, the perspective of the table was severely altered, the doorway was widened... can't remember what else. The original image was a mess compositionally, but that environment was what I had to work with and I wanted to get a sense of his workspace rather than resorting to a tight headshot.

Just glad I have a chance to reshoot (a rarity), 'cause I know (or hope) I can do better. lol

This is classic draymorton that I have come to admire. I like the first version more, and the only nit I have is the brightness in the middle window, however that could be the sun.
