I was out driving the county yesterday evening and came upon this scene. I thought the late afternoon sun and white fences went well together. What do you think?

I like it, the road and fences initially took my eyes to the right side of the photograph almost to the point of leaving the picture but then where taken back by the bend in the fence to the houses' front door.

Besides the fact that I have always wanted to live in a place like this with the white picket fences and long drive to the house, it is a great photo.

What a welcoming feeling. It must be nice to see that every day - except when all that lawn needs mowing. :D
Nice work.

This was one of those places that begged me to come back and take it's picture. I was already 1/2 mile down the road and turned around and went back to catch that light on the fences. I was worried about the fence on the right leading your eye out of the picture but felt in the ong run that the the house and other fence brought you back on target. Thanks to those who took the time and trouble to respond to this simple post.

There is so much movement in this picture, that instantly grabs you and pulls you into the scene. I feel like im running down that drive, bearing to the right, till the shadows from the left fence invite me to run across the lawn and up to my front door. "Mom, is dinner ready?". um, sorry, got a little carried away. I think that kind of life just cries out to us and you portrayed it beautifully. I'm glad your obsession made you turn around and capture it. I've been viewing the photos on this forum for a few months and I notice that your eye just keeps getting better and better.

Thanks for the kind comments Kit. I like you found this to be a very inviting scene. Living in a rural area as I do these kind of opportunities are ever present. I had gone out to try and find west facing subjects to take advantage of the golden hours. As for my eye or eyes they are getting older and have to work harder and harder to come up with images that appeal to me.

It's a beautiful scene and I wish I lived there. I too am concerned about the road leading off to the right. Maybe just a simple crop on the right might help.

I don't think the road leading off to the right is bothersome. I mean, it *does* lead to the right, but as soon as your eye starts following it, the weight of the house draws you up and balances it out. I had no trouble, on first look, seeing the house and knowing what the pic was about. The shot tells the rigth story.

When I first saw your picture I was reminded of a beautiful house that I drove by frequently some years back. Newly constructed, it sat among large, clunky , putty colored trophy homes and drew my attention whenever I drove by. The plantings were new and didn't obstruct the view of the house and it was always tastefully decorated for the season. Because of your photo I drove back to see it today (Just west of Mukwanego Kelly) and found it still to be a great looking house. My shot doesn't approach yours in quality but I think it shows why I like your eye.

Hey, popphoto has an article on jusrt this sort of composition this month. Just got done reading about it! Old Timer is ahead of popphoto! This one is better than the one they use in my opinion.

I just had a pretty good omlette at the Market Square restaurant on the east edge of town there this noon if you need someplace to eat. I don't get over there too often any more but took a detour today on the way to Sam's Club in Waukesha to take a look at this house again.

Sam's club in Waukesha... is that the one over on Springdale Road? If so, I used to work within walking distance of there... at a printing company in that industrial park just next to it.

I'm going to an old school friend's house the day before my 20th HS reunion. She lives out that way.

What a welcoming feeling this pic gives. The lighting is excellent. I think the road is great, and flows so well into the home. The right fence is not distracting at all, but balances the left quite well.

Thanks once again for all those that commented on this image. I have looked this phot over and rethought the location and can't really figure out how I could have shot it differently and still captured the essence of the location. This is the type thread we might want to start over on viewfinder. As Chunk and Todd have pointed out it is a topic that is current and it's something everyone can do.

The photo breaks some of the rules of composition. But who cares? Rules are made to be broken. This image is all the better for it.

This is a superb picture. Nice job Old Timer.
