I took a pic like this of myself once and rather than people appreciate how difficult it was for me to take a pic like this of myself it was removed. If it were a bottle fed baby it would have stayed.
I was also told, in a Restaurant that I wasn't to feed my baby there! I was totally disgusted! "Come and sit over here and once you are done feeding we will find you a table to eat." We were led to a quiet smokey bar area!!! :eek6: I mean it's not like I whip my boob out for all to see. I do it very discreetly so as not to offend others. But when my baby needs feeding she needs feeding.
I am sick of narrow-minded people!
Doesn't everyone know this was the way nature intended us to feed our offspring?
I know this probably is not the thread to say this.... but i totally agree with you Alison on this one.... People seem to become more obsessed with bare bodies or body parts more and more, rather than simply realizing it is part of who we are... The utmost image of affection and love, IMHO, is expressed solely during this phase of a baby's life...
When you say its nature that intended it to be like that, i like to make it perfectly clear to all narrow-minded people out there... Its NATURAL.... there is nothing offensive about it... the only offense is in the mind of those who take offense...
Why not ask someone who we find appalling then to go sit somewhere else.... children are scared of very ugly people, why dont we do that???? since we are just about up and running at being narrow-minded!

Very nice image. I have attempted a few like this but I can't get in close enough and when I crop the noise factor ruins my shot.
We travelled a lot over the last year as my wife was on Maternity leave and we faced a lot of this same behaviour Allison is talking about. But when ever someone had the guts to confront my wife they backed down quicker than a hunter crossing between a mother bear and her cubs. My wife gets her back up and stood her ground telling them if they had a problem with it they could call the police to have her reloactaed.... but be warned.. if they're calling the police she's calling the Media and then says "and I am sure that people from all over the country would be interested in hearing how narrow minded you all are...are you sure you want to see that much of a decline in your business?"
It usually had one of 2 reactions.. They scurried off with their tails between their legs, or everyone within ear shot laughed at the restraunteur and embarrased him into submission. =)
Back to the critique however - I absolutely LOVE the focus on the eye and the DOF is perfect. It took me a few seconds to see what it was I was looking at so you've done an excellent job of disguising the body parts with the focus. Nice work.

This is a beautiful and beautifully taken shot. If it were up to me it would get a sticky on the spot! Re the discussion on restaurants etc, I really and truly feel that if anyone has a problem with a mother breast-feeding her baby in a discreet and sensitive manner, then THEY are the ones with the problem, not the mother. I think most of us are grown enough to see it for what it is: a natural and beautiful thing.

Actually, the thought of my 8 children all standing in a queue to take a turn at my breast, I should imagine would be quite a disturbing scene haha!!!
As it goes, the guy that said that to me no longer works there. The woman now in charge told me she had noticed me feeding the baby before and said that she had noticed how discreet I was about it.
She also said, it's ok if your baby needs feeding then feed her.
As to why you took this shot Emily. I fully understand why you did it. I wanted to capture my daughters beautiful brown eyes looking up at me full of contentment, before she decided to stop nursing. Captured forever :thumbsup:
Mike, Jaedon, Alison & Marc...thank you all for your thoughts on this. I was pretty unsure about posting it, and actually asked opinions from a couple friends to make sure it was discreet enough and so on.
I've always loved how my babies' eyes change when they're nursing, and I wanted to capture his expression. I'm really glad it comes across the way I wanted it to!

A must have shot for the dedicated Mama! This is what it's all about. I think you've done a great job with this and I know it's not easy to balance the camera and the nursing infant not to mention getting focus and comp just right. He has eyes just like his sisters.
It's nice to have you back! I imagine you've had your hands full. [Pun intended.]
