    Moroccan Tanner

I'm thinking of having this printed. What do you think?

I think it's a beauty. I'd like to see a bit more shadow detail and I might crop it a bit tighter. I am having the urge to see it all squared up, too. But I think I'm just getting too anal, there. I think cropping the black from the bottom and maybe one row of tubs from the top will strengthen the composition. And yeah, you should definitely get it printed. It will look good in your house, too

The shadow detail is a matter of having a good monitor i think, but i tend to like blown shadows for the suggestion of things unseen... I have friends with good calibrated monitors. I'll play with your composition suggestions.

    Thanks.

    Re: Moroccan Tanner

TBH the composition itself is not my cup of tea. When I read the tittle my mind immediately thought of bright colors all around, to my surprise it lacks that, but that is my mind playing I guess.

The major problem I see is the angle of the shot itself, which in part I understand why...obviously is to capture the "ink" pools. Also I think the shot will improve drastically if we could the the guy in an upright posture...is kind of hard to look for him....it blends to much with the rest of the environment. Do you have other angles or different shots of this?

    Re: Moroccan Tanner

I wasn't sure what I was looking at at first.
I think if you follow PJ's advice to crop the bottom black, you'll probably need to straighten it so the bottom rail is even. I do agree with with cropping one row at the top.
The tanner I happen to like in the position he is in. Actually wondered for a sec what that was but recognizing the human figure brought everything together for me.
It forces me to look and that is a positive, not a negative.

    Re: Moroccan Tanner

I actually like the black bottom, but would probably crop a full two rows off the top (where the cross wall is relatively straight) above that this just repetition of colors already displayed below, which aren't particularly vibrant anyhow. It would also get the man closer to both the golden ratio point and follow the rule of thirds more closely. The fact that the man is leaning over doesn't really bother me at all either, it gives him more mass, making him easier to find. These suggestions are all based on personal preference and regardless if you decide to follow them or not, I think this one should be printed, preferably big

    Re: Moroccan Tanner

i agree with cropping off the top here. I actually wish this was a horizantal shot with you maybe standing on the right side looking down. for some reason the 'verticalness' of this is kinda throwing me off. the colours and exposure, i'm enjoying though.

    Re: Moroccan Tanner

This is a wonderful photo. Awesome color and texture detail and then the human element as well makes it a real stand out.
I agree with John about cropping the black area off the bottom and I would also crop down from the top just below that leather or material in the upper right.
I disagree about needing to see more shadow detail. Almost every shadowy area has detail on my screen except the tub area above the tanner which is black, and should be I think. The textures and detail throughout seem to be all there and enjoyable and the high contrast here is pleasing too.
This will look fantastic as a print.

I agree I have a hard time spotting the guy. I would have kept this framing and wait for the man to stand up. To me it looks like a giant ice cube tray from this height. I really like this photo. Maybe a little straitening on the bottom and top. It is definitely worth framing!

    Re: Moroccan Tanner

As has been said before I would crop the black area and the horizontal wall from the bottom and the top to remove the wet leather (?) even so it is still one of the best images I have seen - the colours are stunning

    Re: Moroccan Tanner

Hi, I love the photo but I have the same issue as someone else - perspective control. I love the contrast/lost details in the shadows. I think that if you crop the photo just about the middle of the black "pool" it would fix this and still give the illusion of a roomful of pools. It would also make the person larger. I do really like the photo though, nice catch

    Re: Moroccan Tanner

Thanks for the input. I'll play with the cropping.

I have this angle as well, which I framed at that angle on purpose:

But it's not the same character, or colors, though it's the other end of the same row of tanks. It was a rainy day and the sun/clouds kept changing the colors.

    Re: Moroccan Tanner

Nah, the first is WAY better. Seriously maybe it needs a different cropping, but other than that it is really nice. I think it would look a bit better if you bordered it, but it would look really nice matted and framed.
