Can you guess who this is?

Think of Roy Rogers, and the songs "Cool Water" and "Tumbling Tumbleweeds". Okay, now I know you youngsters won't have a clue, but some of you older folk should.

I thought googling might have turned up the answer, but I guess not ... not according to the date on the picture.

I'm not a youngen, and I know the face but the name escapes me. But then Roy Rogers was more on TV there than he was here.

looks kinda like the picture I found of Tim Spencer (aged, of course), but he died in 1974 so it can't be him.

Gene Autry? Assuming the date was when it was printed.

Someone once said, "You know you are getting old when the people on money look young." He doesn't look all that old to me. A fine portrait.

hmmm....not a one could guess, not even with the big hints I gave!! Okay, this is Karl Walker, a former member of the Sons of the Pioneers, a western music group started back in the '30s that has influenced almost all western singers since. Karl is a member of the church that has been asking me to come preach for them in view of calling me as pastor. He is 96 going on 97 next month, and unfortunately has Alzheimer's (although it seems only selective memory loss right now). I grew up listening to the Sons of the Pioneers on the 8-track in my dad's truck, so it was quite a joy to me to learn that he had once been in the group. I sat behind him listening to him as we sung some of the church hymns, and boy what a smooth, sweet voice he still has!

Thanks for sharing. I like the story better than the picture (although it's a good one.) It makes me think of my kids' piano teacher. I think she is about 75, but still highly passionate about her music and still playing with awesome skill after a lifetime of teaching and performing. She's in a place I hope I get to when I'm her age.

A very nice touching story Ray. Quite some history he must've experienced in his time eh? Thanks for the info,

    Jared

well, I can say that in my googling I got close. I found the Sons of the Pioneers, but only focused on the founding members.
