From last night. Taken with a Canon QL-17 and Kodak T400CN. Does it work in B&W?

Yes, it works and I suspect the colors would be rather harsh in the color version.

Good exposure, composition Greg.I think B & W is the right direction here.The noise/ grain is that the film? or underexposed. I'm curious as I know very little about film.

For the digitalites - T400cn is Kodak's answer to black and white film without the processing hassles. It is essentially a monotone colour negative film designed to be processed in c41 (colour) chemistry It was marketed to wedding photographers and as such has a lower contrast so it could cope with the extreme contrast of a bride in a white dress and a groom wearing a black suit. When printed on colour paper (as most photo labs do) it will often have a slight colour cast - unless the lab has very very carefully calibrated their machine. It doesn't print so well on traditional black and white papers but prints ok on colour process black and white papers. It has an ok grain structure given it is a 400iso film but doesn't like low light - (its reciprocity curve is steep) Kodak has another c41 black and white emulsion (i forget what it calls it) but it was aimed at moms and dads and is a lot more forgiving on the lab, tending to print with less of a colour cast but having even less contrast. I remember when happiness was a camera and a bag full of t400cn and portra!

I think it works Greg, seems a little busy for after dark. Around here we roll up the streets at 9pm.

I love this kind of retro photo. It makes me feel young.

Another good one, Greg. I think it works in b&w, but I have a feeling this shot in color might be more interesting. Composition works well for me.

Skyman, Thanks for all of the info. I usally don't use Kodak T400 CN because of the grain and low contrast but was in a bind and needed some B&W film so I just picked some up at the Wal-Mart because I needed some in a hurry and didn't have time to order. So I put it in the Canonet just to play around a bit.
Thanks too Gary I had this one all planned out to be a color shot but stopped in to get an ice cream and couldn't resist. LOL The Canon was in the floorboard and well I had to give it a go.

Is the other Kodak C41 film called BW400CN? I use that at the moment as I'm waiting on some supplies before I shoot some HP5.

Looks good BTW. I'm picking up a cd this afternoon of some film and I'm putting in another roll tonight of some night shots. Can't wait to pick them up. Sorry for hijacking your thread too!

Yes there is a BW400CN. I have used it in the past. I mostly use TriX, TMax and Acros. Those are are great B&W films. Good luck with the night shots. What camera do you use?

My personal favourite C41 black and white film was always ilford xp2, it can be a bit of a dog to print (at least on a colour machine) but it has better grain stuctures, huge latitude and more contrast.

Nice one, Greg. B&W is a good version for this.

Greg - More space on the left side to increase the feeling of an uncrowded yesteryear, and maybe a little less foreground. Otherwise, great shot. It is slightly grainy or distorted as you can tell when reading the signs, but not sure if that's simply a result of the resizing (??). This is such a good subject that I think you could reshoot it a few more times and pick the best shot of all as the best of the best.

Skyman, Thanks again, John, Danic Thanks. GB. I agree I would have liked more on the left but there was a distracting light on that side and yes it must have been a problem with the resizing because the print came out quite well.
