The Boardwalk.

Here is a wider view of the Boardwalk. Is the star filter too much? I never know if I am ruining an image by using it.

I think that I would like it better without the filter. I find I would better control that effect by bumping up the F/stop. I feel this would be stronger without it. I think that the lighting on this one is much better than the last one you posted of it. Do you have a version without the filter?

Thanks for the comments. I never know how to feel about the use of the filter. I think I will just stop using it. Yes, I do have a shot without the filter. Looks the same but no filter. Thanks again,

CF, I really enjoy this image with or without the filter. I only wish that the water would've provided a better reflection of the boardwalk. other than a bit of a blown out sky to the left, your exposure is right on IMO.

Have you visited this place at night? I would like to see a really long exposure of this.

Overall I think it's very well done, enjoyed looking at it and definitely has the wow factor.

The problem with Star Filters has always been controlling the number of highlights that they act upon. If you have a very controlled environment and check the number of stars, these filters can be an addition to a photo. Other wise it might make sense to digitally filter the hightlights that you want emphasized with a virtual Star.

Highlighting the cabin lights on the right portion of the photo seem to be a good thing (for a variety of compositional reasons and just general eye appeal). The pier lights and glints in the clouds are too much for my taste.

The stars can add emphasis if carefully used. I like the photo setting and idea, but I am sorry to say it has too much emphasis.

You might be able to clone the offending accents out ?

thanks for the tips on the use of a star filter. I may just put it away and leave it away. I understand your point and just can't convince myself that the shots ever are better for having used it. I need to practice the technique of getting flare the natural way.

Leels: thanks very much for the kind words. Actually, this shot was taken at near pitch dark. I posted a shot a couple weeks ago of the same subject that came out entirely differently, take a look in my gallery, it wasn't too long ago. It was in a Thread, Get Out When It Rains. Thanks again.

Reminds me of my coastal town, Galveston. I like the filter effect, but yes, I think it takes away from the mood of the photo.
