Before sunrise...
(another) sunrise picture of Jousha Tree.
Sometimes you get lucky and it seems like the sky was pretty close to perfect this morning. It's a little stark though. Not sure what I could have done to improve it, however.

Re: Before sunrise...
I think you have some great colors here and I love the silhouette. I'm not a huge fan of the compositon tho. I realy like you the horizon line is not the center of the photo, and I wish you would have done the same with the silhouette of the tree. For me, the tree holds my attention too much to the center of the photo and doesn't let my eye wonder thru all of the great colors in the sky. A very nice capture.

Re: Before sunrise...
Excellent colours in this photo - like michael said it needs a different crop. If you cut out the tree/bush on the far left just leaving the 2 joshua trees framing the sun I think it would be a much better crop. This will give you a squarer image but it would still look ok. You could always crop some off the bottom to compensate if you want.

Wonderful colors. I'd love to see the print.

GB1,
I like this. The darkness is right with me. The shot could have been interesting with a more luminous sky but it would have been different, not necessarily better. If it was my shot, I guess that I would have put the tree in the right or left third of the frame but I don't really mind the actual location of the tree much. It is still off center and it doesn't prevent me from enjoying the shot as a whole. If you were to crop, a purely sqare crop would works well here I think. Don't even bother to preserve a normal ratio.
regards
Seb

GB1, rethinking about it, it seems that a square crop leads to a more graphic result.
What do you think about this one??

Re: Before sunrise...
Seb,
Thats about what I was thinking except I would have taken the photo to the edge of the original crop so that you have some space around the tree on the right, and then taken it out to where you have it on the left. Hope that makes sense

I personally love this crop. It integrates an awesome subject with a great background. I love the use of the rule of thirds and the sun in the centre works perfect! Lovely shot GB1 and great crop Seb.

Re: Before sunrise...
Thanks All,
Mike/Roger/Seb/Jared...... the crop is interesting: seems like a totally different picture, a little less 'lonely' than the orig. The first thing I did when I saw it was crop out the bottom black from the crop, but that changed the whole feel to something that I really didn't like... too much like 'mini' vers of the orig. Chunk, I haven't even printed it yet. I actually just 'rediscoved' it from a really successful couple rolls I shot a year or two ago. There were so many fascinating shots on those that this one got lost in the crowd -- I just noticed it.
Roger, I tried your suggestion below.. it again seems to change the feel. Amazing what a crop can do to a picture!

Re: Before sunrise...
This is a really nice shot. You've captured a beautifully lit scene. The only thing I'd change on the original is to cut a little bit of the empty space at left out, but not quite to the same degree seb did (although the squarish format is an interesting look too).
