    Baseball

    (Click for larger image.)

I took this one behind the school gym. I found a random baseball lying around and thought I could make an interesting picture. I personally like this one. It's a little tilted because of the awkward position I had to get in to get that low to take the picture.

I like the idea behind this. Your horizon has a slight tilt, but I like where you placed it. Also I like the ball and the shadow that it cast. I'm not sure if the basketball background goes with the baseball. But as I said I like the idea...

I like the idea, but I think the background is missing something: kids playing, a field..

Annunaki, I agree with the other two that your horizon can be straightened out. The concept is good, and would probably be better in proper context (lying in the grass on a ball diamond), but yet, this could be a conceptual thing--meaning, the change of the seasons and baseball is forgotten for now.
    Hope I make sense.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys.

Next time I have a situation for a picture like this one, I'll move it to a different place to make it a better picture (and I'll have to figure out a better way of getting as low as I did to take the picture so the horizon can be even).

I like it being in the parking lot, that's where the home runs went when I was a kid....

Actually, it's just a big blacktop behind the school gym.

    Re: Baseball

This was a good find and you have framed it well. the only thing this suffers from is a background that is too bright and competing for attention with the subject. A few accessories on the lens, such as a graduated nuetral density filter or polarizer even could have helped to reduce the exposure of the bg and brought out the subject even more. You could simulate the effects of these filters in a good photo editing program such as Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. you have a good eye for subject and composition.

    Re: Baseball

There's too much detail in the background. As Gary mentioned it competes. Either more depth-of-field control or controlled, selective blurring of the background. The background should hint at what it is but not be obvious.

You might think about make the ball a larger element in the photo. The line on the playground/parking lot work nicely and the proportions of sky/background and asphalt seem to feel about right to me.

Don't worry about the season or 'topicality', photos of this type will work anytime when all the parts come together.

Keep at and don't pass up opportunities like this!

    Re: Baseball

The basic idea is sound, but the background isn't interesting enough, and there's too much of the asfault in the photo. It's also got some unflattering bright spots that do nothing for the exposure. The color is also somewhat unexciting.

Try this again out in a field with the widest angle lens you have, with shallow and deep depth of fields as an experiment. Throw a little green grass in the shot. I like the low angle you used, but I would use an even lower one -- just off the deck.

    Hope this helps -GB
