I'm on the fence with this one. I did this shot for texture, lighting and sharpness.

I think its a pretty good study in texture and the color is nice as well. Gets soft towards the frames edges and so i would consider cropping this in tighter to frame the sweet spot in focus.

In that case, you really need to have the periphery rendered sharply. If conditions were such that that was not possible, then selective focus should have been applied to a composition which made selective focus very apparent and deliberate for the subject and lighting.

I agree with n8. The texture is there. The lighting somehow doesn't work for me either.

Flash on this would have brought out the bark grain a little more. Agree with some tighter cropping which might help. Nice job though.
